Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that two suspects, one from Uttar Pradesh and another from Haryana , have been caught while the third suspect is still at large. Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has arrived at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai where NCP leader Baba Siddiqui was admitted after he was shot at earlier today.
The shocking assassination of NCP leader Baba Siddique has raised serious concerns about the law and order situation in Maharashtra , where assembly elections are set to take place next month.
Siddique, 66, a former Congressman, was rushed to Lilavati Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. He was attacked outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique's office near Colgate Ground in Nirmal Nagar, Bandra East, according to police reports.
A prominent Muslim leader from Mumbai, Siddique had represented the Bandra (West) seat in the assembly three times and was known for his close ties with various Bollywood stars.
Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar expressed his shock in a condolence message on X, calling the attack "extremely unfortunate and condemnable." He lamented the loss of a friend and a leader who championed the rights of the minority community and secularism, vowing a thorough investigation into the incident.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar informed him that two alleged shooters had been arrested—one from Uttar Pradesh and the other from Haryana —while a third suspect managed to escape.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis , who oversees the home portfolio, visited Lilavati Hospital following the incident. Siddique had recently joined the Ajit Pawar -led NCP.
NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar criticized the deteriorating law and order situation, urging the ruling party to take responsibility and resign. He expressed alarm over how lightly the situation was being handled.
Balasaheb Thorat, leader of the Congress legislature party in Maharashtra , emphasized that the shooting of a leader with Y-category security raises serious questions about public safety. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray described the murder as shocking, highlighting a complete collapse of law and order in the state.
NCP working president Praful Patel, a close friend of Siddique, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident. BJP leader Ashok Chavan, a former Congressman, also voiced his shock, recalling their time together in the Congress party.
Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, the party's in-charge for Maharashtra , shared his grief on X, calling Siddique a “dear friend from my Youth Congress days.”
