Bangla Sahib Gurudwara bans plastic ahead of 550th Prakash Purab

In an effort towards making India plastic-free, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in New Delhi banned us of all s of plastic within Gurudwara complex. According to Manjinder Singh Sirsa, President of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Manment Committee (DSGMC), decision to ban plastic is taken as a part of programs to commemorate 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Disposable plates, glasses, spoons, polystyrene cup-plates, and or single-use plastics items have been banned. plastic items have w been replaced with steel utensils for serving water and 'langar' (community meal) to devotees, Sirsa said. tably, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara is biggest herit Sikh shrine situated in New Delhi. 

"On aver, around5,000 poly bags and rmocol cup-plates were used every day to distribute pras, fruits, and or items to devotees. w, se have been replaced with eco-friendly jute bags, and dona-pattal (leaf bowls and plates) since October 2," he said.

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Manment Committee (DSGMC) has set up a recycling plant that can handle two tonnes of flower and 'langar' waste, and dry leaves daily. organic waste will be converted into manure and vermicompost. According to Sirsa, fully automatic plant is alrey running on a trial basis at present to experiment with zero-waste model and will be commissioned on a full scale in October. committee has also completely shifted to clean piped natural gas for preparing 'langar' for around 35,000 people daily and has furr completely banned use of wood and charcoal for cooking purposes.

India aims to go single-use Plastic-free

While dressing a garing at Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedab, PM Modi h emphasised on India achieving goal of becoming single-use plastic-free by year 2022. He said, “Sanitation, environment protection, and life protection, se three subjects were dear to Gandhi Ji. Plastic is a major threat to all three. refore, we have to achieve goal of freeing country from single-use plastic by year 2022.”
