Valmiki Jayanti 2024: Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is being celebrated today, Thursday, October 17, across various states in North India. Several states have declared a local holiday for schools, offices, and government institutions to commemorate the birth anniversary of the poet.

All schools in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad will remain closed on October 17, as per the directions of the Uttar Pradesh government.

Other states like Punjab , Haryana , and Madhya Pradesh have also announced a public holiday on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the legendary saint.

Several events and processions are scheduled to take place in these states to honor his legacy.

Reportedly, all liquor shops in Delhi will remain closed on October 17. An order from the Office of the Commissioner of Excise clarified that no compensation will be provided to licensees for the suspension of liquor sales during these dry days.

In some cities like Shimla, Guwahati, and Bengaluru, banks will remain closed on Wednesday.

History and Significance

In his early life, Valmiki was a highway dacoit named Ratnakar, who was transformed into a great devotee of Lord Rama by Sage Narada Muni.

After years of meditation, a divine voice declared his penance successful and bestowed upon him the new name Valmiki, meaning “born out of anthills.”

This day is also known as Pragat Diwas. Devotees of the Valmiki sect worship Valmiki Rishi as a form of God, perform Shobha Yatras (processions), sing devotional hymns and bhajans, feed the poor, and light diyas.

The Thiruvanmiyur Temple in Chennai is one of the most well-known temples devoted to the sage.
