Bengaluru: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced plans to introduce Namo Bharat trains in Bengaluru, aiming to improve connectivity between the city and its neighboring regions, particularly Mysuru and Tumakuru.

Speaking on the Centre's commitment to enhancing train transport efficiency in the tech capital, Vaishnaw said, “Bengaluru is growing at a great phase, and our government is committed to making train transport efficient in the tech capital. Along with the sub-urban rail project, we are also planning to introduce brand new Namo Bharat trains in the city.” He further elaborated that these trains will facilitate smoother transportation between Bengaluru and surrounding cities, addressing the rising traffic issues in the region.

The Namo Bharat trains are currently being manufactured at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru. Vaishnaw stated that these semi-high-speed trains are designed to shorten travel times and better connect suburban areas with the city.

“Indian Railways aims to provide ultimate comfort to middle-class people when they take the train journey. The fare for these trains will also be affordable for everyone. Safety has been our top priority as it has multiple sensors. The Kavach system, which will alert the loco pilot about any danger, has been installed. These trains will match the best trains in the world,” he said after unveiling the Vande Bharat sleeper coach in Bengaluru.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently flagged off India’s first Vande Metro services, now renamed ‘Namo Bharat Rapid Rail,’ between Bhuj and Ahmedabad. This service will stop at nine stations and cover a distance of 360 kilometers in 5 hours and 45 minutes, reaching a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour.

Vaishnaw further added that the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail is particularly suited for connecting Bengaluru with Mysuru and Tumakuru, which are 135 km and 70 km apart, respectively. He said, “The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail is perfect for connecting Bengaluru and Mysore... Operating rapid rail between pairs of cities that are up to 200 km apart is an ideal option for frequent and efficient service.”

Vaishnaw also highlighted Bengaluru's role as a magnet for people from neighboring cities like Mysuru and Tumakuru. He mentioned the success of the rapid rail concept between Ahmedabad and Bhuj, expressing hopes that similar services could soon expand to other regions after assessing the performance of initial routes.

The minister discussed the proposal for a circular railway network around Bengaluru, expected to be finalized by the end of December. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 23,000 crore, aims to cover 287 kilometers and alleviate congestion in the city’s existing railway network.

Furthermore, the minister announced plans to relocate the Kempegowda International Airport halt station closer to the departures area, enhancing convenience for travelers. Initial discussions with Bangalore International Airport Limited authorities are set to begin soon.
