Bengaluru traffic police collected Rs. 72 Lakhs as fines in a week

The Bengaluru traffic police have collected over Rs. 72 Lakhs as fine since the implementation of the New Motors Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 within a week. The act was put into effect in Bengaluru on September 3, 2019. According to reports, the traffic police have registered 6,813 cases and a total amount of Rs 72,49,900 has been collected from the violaters. The most common violations included not wearing a helmet, pillion riding, driving without a seatbelt and using mobile phones while driving.
Hefty fines collected in Bengaluru
1,968 riders were booked for not wearing a helmet and 2,645 riders were fined for riding pillion. Rs. 7.08 lakhs were collected in penalties from four-wheelers without seatbelts. Using mobile phones while riding also amounted to total fines of Rs.13.9 lakhs and Rs. 2.12 lakhs was collected for violation one-way rule lanes.

Rs. 30.11 Lakhs collected in 36 hours
After the implementation of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019 the fines collected reached over Rs. 30.11 lakhs within 36 hours of its implementation. The Bengaluru traffic police have been conducting awareness campaigns on social media and in colleges to spread awareness about the new violations included under the Act and the new fine structure for the same.

Hefty fines debated on social media
The hefty fines have become a topic of discussion on social media. While some people say that the fines will help curb traffic violations others think they are unnecessary.

There are reports of motorists being charged with fines of Rs. 23,000 for traffic violations. In another incident, a truck driver was charged Rs. 86,500 for drunk driving. While speaking to a media publication, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) BR Ravikanthe Gowda, said that the hefty fines would encourage the public to be cautious while being on the road. He also said that such thoughts among road users would make roads safer. In August, the Bengaluru police collected fines over Rs. 98.27 Lakhs when the Karnataka transport department revised traffic fines. A man was charged with a challan of Rs. 17,000 on Wednesday for driving without a license, drunk driving and driving without a helmet.
