Thiruvananthapuram: In order to reduce road accidents and strengthen traffic rules in Kerala, the state Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has come up with a new regulation for two-wheeler riders which prohibits them from engaging in conversation with their pillion riders, according to media reports.

The directive aims to underscore the possible rises posed by distractions like talking while riding. The media report claimed that a circular has been sent to all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) by the MVD to rigorously enforce this rule.

Joint Transport Commissioner K Manoj Kumar is said to have directed the RTOs to take immediate action against any offenders.

As per sources, those who will be found flouting the rule will have to face punishment,  although the specific penalty has not been disclosed yet.

Talking with passengers while riding can lead to distractions, impaired decision-making and delayed reaction time which can divert attention from critical road conditions and traffic scenarios. This increases the possibility of accidents because of which the state has introduced this new rule for bikers who do not follow the rule.

Convesring with pillion riders also involves turning the head or adjusting posture which can destabilize the vehicle and compromise the rider's control over the two-wheeler. This can lead to accidents particularly at high speeds or in heavy traffic area.
