BHU students protesting against reinstatement of a professor accused of sexually harassing women students, called off ir agitation on Sunday, September 15, after authorities assured that matter would be reviewed. students were protesting since previous evening, demanding that professor be punished.

After assurance from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Vice-Chancellor, that issue of reinstating professor will be looked into and referred back to executive council for a review, students called off ir protest, according to a press release. 'Chaube was suspended in October 2018'

'Till time, executive council reconsiders it, Prof S K Chaube is directed to proceed on long leave', it said. Chaube was suspended in October 2018, on charges of sexual misconduct levelled by some students of his department. In June, BHU executive council, highest decision-making body of varsity, revoked suspension of Chaube, however, it censured and restricted him for taking acemic classes.

Chaube returned to taking classes a few days ago, triggering protests, a student said. In order to ensure prevention of sexual harassment, university has alrey circulated guidelines framed under Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employee and Students in Higher Educational Institutions Act, release said. It will be re-circulated for displaying it on tice board of each department, it said.

students h begun a protest on late Saturday night (September 14) demanding suspension of professor who allegedly me obscene remarks and vulgar comments during an acemic trip to Odisha in October 2018. students h filed a complaint against professor to women’s grievance cell of university and also submitted complaint to Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Executive Council, Rakesh Bhatnagar. professor was expelled from university but has been reinstated again after an eight-month suspension.

professor has w been censured and reinstated. VC has said that strict punishment h been given to accused professor which will impact his service record and he won’t be able to hold any ministrative position in future. He appended that professor was suspended only till completion of inquiry as a part of procedure and executive council has given him a setback by making allegations a part of his service record furr stating that he will t be allowed to conduct any educational tours in future.
