BHU: NCW seeks report in sexual harassment case against professor

NCW has sought a report on actions taken by BHU after protests led by students against the return of professor suspended over sexual misconduct allegations.

In wake of protests by BHU (Banaras Hindu University) students following return of professor suspended over allegations of sexual misconduct,  National Commission for Women(NCW) on Monday sought a report on action taken by University authorities in matter. In a letter issues to BHU Vice-Chancellor Rakesh Bhatnagar, NCW has stated that it is seriously perturbed by reported incident and resentment among students in matter. Furrmore, a report has been sought by women's panel in case from BHIU's internal complaints committee (ICC).

"Considering gravity of matter, it is requested that Commission be apprised of detailed action taken report along with report of internal complaints committee," NCW letter re.

BHU students protest

students at BHU has been protesting against reinstatement of professor allegedly accused of sexually harassing women students. Demanding suspension and punishment for professor, students led a protest on Saturday night in campus. As per reports, professor allegedly me obscene remarks and vulgar comments at women students during an acemic trip to Odisha in October 2018. students h filed a complaint against professor to women’s grievance cell of university and also submitted complaint to Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Executive Council, Rakesh Bhatnagar. Taking cognisance of matter, university has expelled professor was expelled in October 2018, but w he has been reinstated by authorities after an eight-month suspension, which triggered protests by students.

BHU assures action

In aftermath of protests, BHU Vice-Chancellor assured that matter will be reconsidered and a review will be conducted by  executive council. Following assurance by BHU authorities, students called off ir strike. authorities stated that complaints received against Professor S K Chaube, Department of Zoology, raised by some students of department were inquired into by Complaints Committee at university.
