Bihar Rains: Woes continue to haunt Patliputra residents in Patna

Due to heavy downpour and continuous waterlogging, people residing in the Patliputra colony of Patna city and its adjoining areas are having a tough time in reaching their respective workplaces. Also, some of the locals are forced to wade through knee-deep waters to meet their relatives admitted to the hospital.

"My sister is admitted to the hospital. The stagnation of water is causing trouble for us each day. People are falling sick because of dirty water," said Raju Kumar, a local. "We have told our pants to reach the hospital. Chances are high that some people may fall prey to dengue because of the stagnant water," said Jaglal Ram, another local.

Apart from Patna, low-lying areas like Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Gardani Bagh, Dak Bungalow and SK Puri are also submerged in water due to heavy rainfall and choked sewage. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna and its nearby regions are likely to receive more rainfall in the next two days.

Earlier, the water level in Punpun River which was flowing 3.01 meters above the danger mark in Bihar has started receding, a Water Resources Department bulletin said on Saturday. The water level of the Ganga has also come below the danger mark at Digha ghat here bringing much-needed respite for the people of Patna and its adjoining areas from the threats of the flood.

Orange alert issued in Patna

The State Government had issued an Orange alert in Patna for October 3 and 4 over the IMD forecast warning that the area might receive heavy rainfall in the coming days. Routine life has been adversely affected as there is no electricity or water in the houses. People are also suffering due to a shortage of food.

Bihar floods

Bihar has been struck with a devastating flood situation after retreating monsoon caused havoc in many parts of the state. Heavy rains in Bihar have claimed more than 50 lives and thousands have been affected.

Relief and rescue operations are being carried out continuously in 15 districts of the northern and eastern parts of the flood-hit state. 494 panchayats of these 15 districts are submerged in floodwaters and more than 8 thousand affected people have been provided shelter in 19 relief camps in the State.
