Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to honour PM Modi over 'Swachh Bharat'
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will present an award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his Swachh Bharat initiative when he visits the US later this month

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation anunced that it would hour Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an award recognizing his contribution for Swachh Bharat initiative. It will be presented to PM Modi on his visit to United States of America. date of award ceremony is speculated to be September 25. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (MoS) in Prime Minister’s Office wrote on microblogging website Twitter that PM Modi’s diligent and invative initiatives h brought laurels from across world.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
After PM Modi assumed office for first time, his government embarked on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) on October 2, 2014. aim of this initiative was to clean up ros, streets and or places in India’s cities, towns and vills as country h been plagued by perennial problem of uncleanliness. Also, it sought to end open defecation in country by building toilets in individual households as well as public toilets in community s. PM resolved that goal of ‘Clean India’ would be achieved by October 2, 2019, which is 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) has been lauded by several organizations across world for successfully meeting most of its targets. For instance, Ecomic Survey of 2019 mentions, “As on May 29, 2019, 5,61,014 vills (93.41 per cent), 2,48,847 gram panchayats (96.20 per cent)- 6,091 blocks (88.60 per cent) and 618 districts (88.41 per cent) have been declared ODF (Open Defecation Free).” United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Henrietta Ford, praised PM Modi for investing political capital in Swachh Bharat Mission in 2018. Similarly, World Health Organization (WHO) lauded SBA and ded that this could result in over "14 million years of a healthy life". Bill Gates himself spoke very positively about SBA at Goalkeepers event in New York in October 2018.
“ Indian government is to be congratulated for putting a focus on sanitation because malnutrition rates in India are substantially above what you’d expect, given strong ecomic development that India has h. And that means a lot in terms of kids t developing ir full mental and physical capacity,” said Gates. He, along with his wife Melinda, helmed Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to reduce extreme poverty and enhance healthcare. It is considered largest private foundation in world.
