Protests toppled Bangladesh's government
What began as peaceful student protests in Bangladesh against a quota system for government jobs escalated into a major uprising, leading to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and fleeing the country by helicopter.
Her 15-year rule came to an end after weeks of violent unrest, which resulted in nearly 300 deaths, according to local media reports. The government’s attempts to suppress the demonstrations—by blaming sabotage and opposition parties—through bullets, curfews, and internet blackouts only intensified the outrage and fueled further protests.
On Monday, protesters defied a military curfew to march into the capital’s center, following a weekend of violence that left dozens dead. As troops withdrew and internet access was restored, tens of thousands took to the streets to celebrate, with thousands storming the Prime Minister’s official residence.
Military chief Gen. Waqar-uz-Zaman announced that the army would seek the president’s guidance to form an interim government and called for calm in a public address on Monday afternoon.
