Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has expelled party leader Sujeet Kumar for alleged "anti-party activities." The expulsion, announced on Friday, follows Kumar’s resignation from his position as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, a move that has been formally accepted by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
In a statement, the Naveen Patnaik -led BJD said, "Sujeet Kumar, M.P., Rajya Sabha representing Biju Janata Dal is expelled from the Party with immediate effect for anti-party activities. He has let down the Party which sent him to Rajya Sabha and hopes and aspirations of people of Kalahandi district."
Sujeet Kumar, who represented the Kalahandi district in Odisha , had been a prominent figure within the party. His expulsion marks a significant political development within the BJD.
In his resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha chairman, Kumar said he took the decision “consciously”.
“I take this oppostiunity to express my profuse gratitude to you for the opportunities provided to me to raise issues of public importance, and of my state Odisha , in the House,” Kumar said in the resignation letter.
This comes a month after Kudumi community leader Mamata Mohanta resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the BJD. She was recently elected unopposed to the Upper House of Parliament as a BJP MP.
