'We Will Close Down RG Kar Hospital': Calcutta High Court On Vandalism During Protest

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has condemned mob attack at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during midnight protest and Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court has called it an ‘absolute failure of state machinery’.

Calcutta High Court has questioned ‘demolition and renovation’ at ‘crime scene’ and has said that if required, court may shut down RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Calcutta High Court took up matters on vandalism at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises which took place on night of August 14.

State: re was a police force present.

CJ: y couldn’t protect ir own men? Sorry state of affairs. How will se doctors work fearlessly?

CJ: You are taking measures after incident. What were preventive measures?

Sr v Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya: At 3pm CBI investigation was directed. At 6pm y were demolishing place of occurrence.

Sr v: n y vandalised hospital and police. police hid behind demonstrators.

se hooligans went to look for third floor. Third floor means fourth storey in Bengali, which was place of occurrence.

y misunderstood and went to second floor inste, reby saving crime scene.

Sr v: Was it not pre-planned?

Counsel: State machinery failed. crime scene was RG Kar Hospital, y couldn’t protect it.

State: demolition work was not near place of occurrence.

Court: What was urgency?

State: That h nothing to do with what happened.

Court: You go to any district court, no lies washrooms. PWD does nothing! What was need here?

‘We Will Close Down RG Kar Hospital’

Fearing possibility of a repetition of what happened on night of August 14, Calcutta High Court said that y will shift everyone and close down RG Kar Hospital.

Court said, “We will close down hospital. We will shift everyone. Close hospital. How many patients are re?”

CJ: issue is that if this thing which happened on 14th, what will happen if it is repeated? If police got injured and couldn’t stop mob, law and order situation h failed?

State: This kind of demonstration happened all over Calcutta. Only here violence happened.

Counsel: We have videos to show se people were given access by police. y came in lorries. se people came to destroy place of occurrence.

Counsel: re is no institutional accountability in offences like this. re is no compliance with POSH mechanisms.

CJ: This is long term plan. How to prevent this in near future? It has gone beyond control of state police.
