Govt extends import approval system for laptops, tablets till Dec 31
The government on Tuesday extended the existing approval system for import of certain IT hardware products, including laptops and tablets, for three months till December 31.
The deadline for review of the system is September 30.
These imports stood at USD 8.4 billion in 2023-24 against the authorisation of about USD 9.5 billion. Most of these imports were coming from China.
"It is clarified that the importers are allowed to apply for import authorisations which will be valid up to December 31, 2024. Further, the existing import authorisations issued till September 30, 2024, will continue to be valid up to December 31, 2024," the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a policy circular.
Importers would be required to apply for fresh authorisations from January 1, 2025, "subject to detailed guidance to be provided shortly", it added.
On August 3, 2023, the government first imposed import restrictions on laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers.
After the industry flagged concerns over the curbs, the government in October last year rolled out an import management/ authorisation for imports of these products.
The system is aimed at monitoring inbound shipments of these items into the country without hurting market supply.

HC dismisses plea to restrain CBI from filing charge sheet in coaching centre deaths case
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea that sought to restrain the CBI from filing charge sheet in connection with the drowning of three civil services aspirants due to flooding of a coaching centre's basement in Old Rajinder Nagar here.
The high court said there is no law where the court can either direct the probe agency to file a charge sheet or impose a stay on filing of the charge sheet.
The court dismissed the application filed by the father of a civil services aspirant who died in July.
"I consider that the request being made by the petitioner's counsel is beyond the law. The CBI is in the process of conducting the investigation. There is no law where the court can either direct to file the charge sheet or can impose a stay on filing of the charge sheet.
"The prayer being made by the petitioner is beyond the law and hence the application is dismissed. There is no jurisdiction with the court to stay the filing of charge sheet," Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma said.

Chief Minister's First Statement on MUDA Scam Verdict
"I have come to know about the contents of the high court order through the media. "I will respond after reading a copy of the order. The court completely rejected the prosecution given by the Governor under Section 218. The judges are confined to Section 17A of the Governor's order.
I am not averse to any investigation. I will consult experts on whether such an investigation is allowed under the law or not. I will discuss with legal experts and decide the course of action. In his complaint, the complainant had sought permission for investigation and prosecution under sections 218 BNSS, 17A and 19PC Act. However, the governor had refused the prosecution sanction sought under Section 19PC at the initial stage.
On this day, the Hon'ble Court has categorically rejected the sanction of prosecution granted by the Governor under Section 218 BNSS. I am confident that in the coming days, the truth will come out and the investigation under Section 17A will be quashed. “The people of the state are behind me in this political fight. Is it their blessing?”
