Maharashtra govt releases Rs 2,399 crore subsidy to cotton, soybean growers

The Maharashtra government on Monday disbursed Rs 2,399 crore to cotton and soybean growers under a new scheme that provides a Rs 5,000 per hectare subsidy to farmers. Farmers who cultivated cotton and soybean in the 2023 kharif season and had registered themselves on the state government's portal for the same received the subsidy amount directly into their bank accounts.

US to send few thousand more troops to Middle East to defend Israel

The Pentagon on Monday said that the US is sending an additional “few thousand” troops to the Middle East to bolster security and to be prepared to defend Israel if necessary. The increased presence will come from multiple fighter jet squadrons, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters. It follows recent strikes in Lebanon and the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a significant escalation in the war in the Middle East, this time between Israel and Hezbollah.

Joint military exercise of India-Kazakhstan begins in Uttarakhand

Will not tolerate obstructionist attitude, warns Delhi HC over hospital reforms

The Delhi High Court on Monday said it will not tolerate the "obstructionist attitude" of authorities in relation to the implementation of the recommendations of a six-member expert committee on improving medical services in hospitals run by the city government. A bench headed by Chief Justice Manmohan, which had earlier assigned the task of implementation to the AIIMS director, asserted that the stakeholders cannot indulge in "stonewalling" the progress and directed that a fresh meeting with city officials be called by Dr M Srinivas on October 5.

High Court directs civic bodies to implement programme to deal with monkey menace in Delhi

The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the civic authorities to prepare and implement a programme to deal with the monkey menace in the national capital. Remarking that the monkey population was "increasing" but no action was being taken, a bench headed by Chief Justice Manmohan asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to ensure that monkeys are caught and released in the Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary.

Telangana CM to release action plan on antimicorbial resistance on Oct 3

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will inaugurate a three-day Global South Conference on Infection Prevention, Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship (G-SPARC)-2024 here on October 3.

An action plan on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by the state government will be released during the conference, Dr Ranga Reddy Burri, president, Infection Control Academy and R Govind Hari, chairman, Pragyaan Sustainable Health Outcomes Foundation said on Monday.

Six states in India have AMR plans in place. Chief Minister Reddy will release the AMR plan during the conference and Telangana will be the seventh state in the country to have the plan, they said.

Antibiotic or antimicrobial resistance is when drugs designed to kill infectious bacteria and fungi are rendered ineffective because the bugs have evolved and developed an ability to defeat these drugs.

Kerala Minister raises concerns over Waqf Amendment Bill in meeting with JPC chairman

Kerala Minister for Waqf and Haj Pilgrimage V Abdurahiman has raised objections and concerns about the Waqf Amendment Bill during a meeting with Joint Parliamentary Committee Chairman Jagdambika Pal in Chennai.

Kerala Waqf Board Chairman M K Sakeer was also present at the meeting. The minister had earlier met Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to present these concerns.

According to the release, Kerala has about 12,000 registered Waqf properties, along with an equal number that are not registered.

"Given this situation, the minister requested a special sitting of the JPC in Kerala to gather opinions from different sections of the state about the Waqf amendments. The JPC chairman indicated that this request would be considered," it said.

The minister also demanded that any amendments that go against the basic principles of Waqf be withdrawn.

Mamata refuses to intervene in tea garden bonus issue in Darjeeling hills

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday refused to intervene in the ongoing bonus issue of tea garden workers of Darjeeling hills where they were observing a 12-hour general strike.

She alleged that the impasse was the result of political disturbances.

"I don't support any strike. A tripartite meeting is going on with the Labour Commissioner regarding the demands of the tea garden workers. They will decide (the matter)," Banerjee told reporters in Siliguri before leaving Kolkata.

Tea garden workers were demanding a 20 per cent bonus while management proposed only 13 per cent, leading to an impasse.

Labour unions representing tea garden workers in the Hills have announced a 12-hour general strike after negotiation over the bonus failed to yield any result.

SC issues notice on Atishi, Kejriwal's plea, stays trial court proceedings

The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Delhi government and BJP leader Rajiv Babbar on a plea of Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal challenging the high court order refusing to quash a defamation case against them.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued a notice in the matter and stayed the proceedings in the trial court.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Atishi and Kejriwal, submitted that the defamation case has been filed by Babbar, as authorised representative of BJP Delhi.

"BJP, neither central nor Delhi, has not filed any complaint. Babbar is not the person I have allegedly defamed," he submitted.

Anti-Israel protest held in Lucknow against Hezbollah chief's killing

Hundreds of people held a protest in the old city area here against the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Israeli airstrikes, officials said on Monday.

The call for the protest was given by Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad who also declared a three-day mourning starting Sunday following Nasrallah's death. He asked people to hoist black flags atop their houses and close shops.

Holding black flags and torches in their hands, the anti-Israel protests were held on Sunday evening between Chhota Imambara and Bada Imambara, they said.

The protesters, many of whom were holding portraits of Nasrallah, raised slogans against the US and Israel and said Nasrallah was a martyr.

Jawad expressed grief over Nasrallah's death and termed it as an irreparable loss.

Delhi Government Sets Up 24x7 'Green War Room' to Tackle Winter Pollution

The Delhi government has set up a 24x7 'Green War Room' to enhance the execution of its 21-point winter action plan aimed at curbing pollution in the national capital, Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Monday. Addressing a press conference, Rai said that a team of eight environmental experts will manage the war room, which has been assigned seven key responsibilities.  A new task assigned to the war room this year includes analysing drone mapping and conducting real-time source apportionment studies, Rai said.  "The war room will also analyse satellite data of stubble burning, along with information from 13 pollution hotspots," said the minister.

S Jaishankar Reaches Washington DC, to Meet Tony Blinken

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will meet his US counterpart Tony Blinken on Tuesday, during which they are expected to discuss a wide range of bilateral and global issues, including the Ukraine war and the Middle East crisis. Jaishankar, who arrived in the US capital on Sunday, will also meet other Cabinet-rank and senior Biden administration officials. Apart from meeting US Secretary of State Blinken, the external affairs minister is also scheduled to interact with the think-tank community. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host a conversation between Jaishankar and its president Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuellar on the future of US-India relations.
