J-K Assembly Polls: Congress Announces Third List of 19 Candidates

The Congress on Monday released its third list for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, fielding JKPCC working president Raman Bhalla from RS Pura-Jammu South, Chaudhary Lal Singh from Basohli, and former NSUI chief Neeraj Kundan from Bishnah (SC).

With this list, the Congress has declared a total of 34 candidates for the assembly polls.

A special court on Monday acquitted former BJP MLA Aakash Vijayvargiya, son of powerful Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, in a case where a building inspector of the Indore Municipal Corporation was allegedly assaulted with a cricket bat in 2019. Besides Aakash Vijayvargiya, an MLA of the BJP which was then in the opposition, nine other accused in the case were also acquitted of various charges, including assault and criminal intimidation, by the special court set up for trial of criminal matters involving MPs/MLAs, said a defence lawyer.

Hundreds Assemble for '9-9-9' Rally in Kolkata, Demand Justice for RG Kar Hospital Victim

Rallies were taken out in different parts of the metropolis as part of an event termed ‘9-9-9’, with people assembling for nine minutes when the clock struck 9 on Monday evening, demanding justice for the RG Kar hospital doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered.

Singing the national anthem, hundreds gathered for nine minutes at Shyambazar, Esplanade, New Town, Jadavpur 8B terminus, apart from Bally and Mandirtala in neighbouring Howrah town.

"We have symbolically named the protest ‘9-9-9’... The brutal attack on our sister had taken place on August 9, exactly one month back. All we seek is justice for her," Ushashi Dey, a protesting college student at Jadavpur said.

The protesters also displayed mobile flash lights for nine minutes and shouted slogans, demanding punishment for the culprits.

GST Council to Finalise Tax Cuts on Health, Life Insurance Premiums in Nov, Sets Up GoM

The GST Council on Monday reached a broad consensus on reducing taxes on health and life insurance premiums, and a final decision on this would be taken in the November meeting.

The Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state counterparts, exempted from GST grants or funds received for R&D by central or state-affiliated universities or those institutions which have Income Tax exemptions.

Briefing reporters after the 54th meeting of the GST Council, Sitharaman said the Council has decided to set up two new Groups of Ministers (GoM) -- one on medical and health insurance and the other on compensation cess.

Corps Commander of the Army's Chinar Corps Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai Monday reviewed the security situation and operational preparedness in north Kashmir ahead of the assembly elections in the union territory.

Kolkata Rape-Murder: CBI Raises Doubts in SC Over Forensic Report of Medic, Says Will Re-Examine

The CBI on Monday raised doubts over the forensic report of the postgraduate medic who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and said it has decided to send samples to AIIMS for further investigation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI, informed a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud that according to the medical report, the death was homicidal and there is evidence of forceful penetration and sexual assault.

"When the girl was found at 9.30 am, she was in a semi-nude condition. There were injury marks on the body. They have taken the samples and sent it to the CFSL (Central Forensic Science Laboratory) in West Bengal.

Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder: SC Reprimands Lawyer For Raising Voice

"Are you trying to address the gallery outside the court?" an annoyed Supreme Court bench asked a lawyer and reprimanded him for his aggressive tone while making submissions on the Kolkata rape and murder of a trainee doctor.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud took objection to the manner in which advocate Koustav Bagchi addressed the court.

"I have been noticing your demeanour for the last two hours. Don't raise your voice, lower your pitch. You are addressing three judges of the Supreme Court and not the views of the YouTube who are watching the proceedings live," Chief Justice Chandrachud told him sternly.

The angry reaction by Justice Candrachud came when Bagchi interjected while the bench, also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, was asking the West Bengal government to not take any adverse action against the protesting doctors if they resumed their duties tomorrow by 5 p.m.

Durga Puja Organisers Hopeful Festival, RG Kar Protests Can Be Held Together

Most Durga Puja organisers on Monday said while West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged protesters seeking justice for the murdered RG Kar doctor to prepare for the festival, they are hopeful that the celebrations and agitation will continue simultaneously.

Santosh Mitra Square Puja committee, known for its large-scale celebrations, said while the festival will proceed as usual, they will also advocate for justice for the murdered postgraduate trainee doctor.

Debashis Kumar, organiser of Tridhara Sammilani Puja and a senior member of the 'Forum for Durgotsav,' told PTI, "The Chief Minister has made an appeal and we are moving forward with our preparations for the festival, which is just a month away." Banerjee had previously urged organisers to prepare for the festival despite the recent tragic incident.

CSL Launches Two Anti-Submarine Vessels of Indian Navy

The Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) here on Monday launched two anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts which were manufactured here for the Indian Navy. The two ships are part of the series of eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts which are under construction in CSL.

After the ceremonial puja, the ships were launched in the presence of the chief guest and Southern Naval Command Chief, Vice Admiral V Srinivas.

Uttarakhand to Have Special Committee on Himalayan Conservation: CM Dhami

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday said a special committee on the conservation of the Himalayas will be formed in Uttarakhand.

To be constituted under the convenorship of Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) Director Durgesh Pant, the committee will address concerns related to Himalayan conservation, Dhami said at an event here on the occasion of Himalaya Diwas.

Climate change and global warming pose a threat to the Himalayan ecology and a collective effort is needed to conserve the Himalayas, he said.

"We need to understand the importance of the Himalayas in a new way. The government is continuously working towards the revival of water sources and rivers. The Spring and River Rejuvenation Authority has been formed in the state for the purpose. The Himalayas are our invaluable heritage, which needs to be saved," the chief minister said.

The NIA on Monday chargesheeted four men in the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case and said the accused were involved in a "failed IED attack" at the Bengaluru BJP office on the day of the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Protest Cannot Be at Cost of Duty: SC to West Bengal Medics Protesting Over Kolkata Rape and Killing

"Protest cannot be at the cost of duty," the Supreme Court observed on Monday as it directed the West Bengal doctors protesting over the rape and killing of a postgraduate medic at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata to return to work immediately.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud directed the protesting doctors to get back to work by 5 pm on Tuesday and assured them that there will be no adverse action if they resume duty.

"The state of West Bengal must take steps to create confidence in the minds of the doctors that their concerns regarding their safety and security are being duly attended to. In order to ensure this, all the district collectors and SPs (superintendents of police) shall take stock of the situation in all government medical colleges and public hospitals and provide adequate safety.

CJI: When the body is dispatched after the PMR, only the doctors doing the inquest would look at it, where is that filled out challan for the dead body, let the CBI give it to us.

SG: Not in the file given to us

CJI: Ms Sharma where is the challan when dead body is given for PMR?

CJI; This form also has a column with remarks what clothes and other things seized were sent to the doctors who conducted the PMR

SG: File to CBI doesnt contain, but it appears from the arguement of my friend that it exists

Counsel: without the challan, the doctor cannot conduct the PMR
