CBI ‘Unable To Conduct Kolkata Rape-Murder Probe Smoothly’
Kolkata Rape and Murder: According to a senior CBI official, the investigation has been hindered by the lack of concrete evidence.
Kolkata: A month after the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues to encounter significant obstacles in its investigation. The agency, which took over the probe on August 13 following a Calcutta High Court order, has reported difficulties due to insufficient evidence.
According to a senior CBI official, the investigation has been hindered by the lack of concrete evidence. Despite the arrest of Sanjoy Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, and initial indications that other individuals may be involved, no additional suspects have been named.
The official noted that the available DNA evidence and circumstantial details do not substantiate claims of multiple perpetrators.
Compounding the challenge, it was revealed that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, ordered the demolition of a restroom and toilet near the crime scene on August 10. The CBI suspects that crucial evidence may have been lost during this demolition, further complicating the investigation.
The victim’s mother has voiced concerns about potential evidence tampering, noting that the scene appeared to have been carefully managed upon her arrival after the crime.
Forensic tests have so far confirmed a match between the DNA of the victim and that of Roy, contradicting claims of gang involvement. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory's analysis supports the CBI’s findings that only one person, Roy, was involved in the sexual assault.
In a related development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a parallel investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. The ED's probe has uncovered allegations of embezzlement and illegal appointments linked to Ghosh. Investigators have also discovered that Ghosh and his wife own several high-value properties. The ED has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against Ghosh, which serves as a preliminary report for further investigation.
