As the nation mourns the unfathomable demise of India's first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat, the Indian Army has left no stone unturned to make arrangements for their last rites. The couple succumbed to injuries on December 8 after an Indian Air Force Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying 14 defence personnel crashed in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor.
The CDS along with his wife and 12 personnel of the defence staff were travelling to a college in Wellington when the devastating mishap took 13 lives. Notably, Group Captain Varun Singh is the lone survivor of the horrifying episode and was on life support at the Military Hospital in Wellington before he was taken to Bengaluru for further treatment. All efforts are reportedly being made to save his life.

CDS Travelled By Chopper Due To Clear Weather; Carcade Was On Standby At Airbase
Sources told Republic TV that CDS General Bipin Rawat travelled to Wellington by the IAF helicopter as the weather at Coonoor was clear. As per the details emerging after the completion of the first round of the investigation, a carcade was also on standby at the Sulur Air Base to deal with the contingency of rough weather. Moreover, sources indicated that the chopper might have crashed into a hill as the spread of the wreckage is wide.
Earlier in the day, sources revealed that the helicopter had announced its descent in 7-8 minutes in its last communication to the Sulur Air Base but did not make a distress call. A total of 13 persons including the Chief of Defence Staff, his wife Madhulika Rawat, his Defence Adviser Brig Lakhbinder Singh Lidder, Staff Officer Lt Col Harjinder Singh and nine other Armed Forces personnel lost their lives in the IAF helicopter crash. The tri-services team investigating this incident is focusing on all possible reasons including the human error element.

- CDS Rawat’s mortal remains have been laid in state at 3 Kamraj Marg from 1100 hours till 1330 hours to enable people to pay the last homage.
- A total of 12 officers (from the Army, Navy & Air Force) of the rank of Brigadier and equivalent is on Vigil Duty to maintain continuous vigil over the mortal remains while it is laid in state.
- Six officers (02 each from Army, Navy & Air Force) of the rank of Lieutenant General equivalent will be the Pall (National Flag) Bearers
- Wreaths are being laid by visiting dignitaries while the mortal remains will be laid at Brar Square Cremation Ground.

Brigadier Lidder's final journey with military honours
Among the armed personnel who lost their lives in the IAF helicopter crash near the Upper Coonoor region in Tamil Nadu, was Brigadier Lakhwinder Singh Lidder. He was a decorated soldier who worked extensively on tri-services reforms as the defence assistant to India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat.
Brig Lidder, a second-generation Army officer was set to be promoted as Major General soon. After serving as a key member of General Rawat's team for more over a year, he was prepared for his upcoming posting.
Decorated with the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal, Brigadier Lidder in December 1990 after passing out from the Indian Military Academy, was commissioned into the Second Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. Later, he commanded the same battalion. Brigadier Lidder had also served along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the North-East and in a counter-terrorist environment in Jammu and Kashmir.
Brigadier Lidder is survived by his wife Geetika, who is a school teacher, and a 16-year old daughter.

Govt set to start process of appointing next CDS soon; Gen Naravane frontrunner
The government is set to begin the process soon to appoint the next Chief of Defence Staff with Army Chief Gen MM Naravane emerging as the front-runner for the top post that fell vacant following the demise of Gen Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash.
The move by the government comes even as a number of retired military commanders said it will be prudent to appoint Gen Naravane as he is retiring as the Chief of Army Staff in five months.

China stooped to an all-time low on Thursday as it attempted to play filthy politics on the unfortunate and tragic demise of India's first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat. Hiding behind its stooge Global Times' story, China made a very shameful and propagandist comment claiming that the death of General Bipin Rawat in the Indian Air Force chopper crash 'exposed the lack of discipline and combat preparedness' of India.

In a tragic event, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other security officials passed away as a Mi5-V17 chopper flying in from the Sulur Air Force Base to Wellington crashed on Wednesday. The mortal remains of the deceased were moved from Wellington to Sulur by road as the weather is not fit for air operations. From Sulur, the mortal remains are being brought in an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft to Palam.

CDS Bipin Rawat's funeral today, India to pay final respects to the General
As per the schedule, common citizens will be able to pay their respects to the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who perished along with his wife and 11 other personnel of the armed forces in the military helicopter crash on Wednesday near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, in Delhi.
According to PTI, the bodies of General Rawat and his wife Madhulika will be kept at their Kamaraj Marg residence from 11am to 12:30pm for the general public to pay their final respects.
The slot between 12:30pm and 1:30pm will be kept for military personnel to pay their respects to the braveheart general and his wife. The final journey of General Rawat from his residence to the Brar Square crematorium is scheduled to begin around 2pm.
