Meghalaya-based insurgent group, HNLC has been accused of violent activities that threaten sovereignty and integrity of India. HNLC claims to represent Khasi and Jaintia tribes and has been allegedly involved in intimidation, and extortion of funds from civilians. banned group has also been linked to or insurgent groups in Norast India.
Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued notification, stating that if HNLC's activities are not curbed, y may regroup and rearm mselves, leing to furr violence in region. HNLC has been named in 48 cases, including explosions and planting of explosives in Meghalaya between November 2019 and June 2024.

During police and security forces' action, as many as seventy-three of its cres have been arrested, and three have surrendered in past five years.
MHA has banned HNLC and all its factions as an unlawful association with immediate effect, starting November 16, 2024 ². This move is seen as a step towards curbing group's anti-national activities and maintaining law and order in region.
