The Centre has proposed to build a double-decker flyover connecting Chennai Port with other vital locations in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday.

Centre has proposed to build a double-decker flyover connecting Chennai Port with or vital locations in Tamil Nu at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, Union Minister Nitin Gkari said on Wednesday. This would reduce traffic congestion in city to a great extent, he said.

Union minister of ro transport and highways, who was on a private visit to city, said work on Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway would also commence soon. During his brief interaction with Chief Minister K Palaniswami, Gkari suggested that flyover be designed as a double-decker one by bringing in international consultants in place of four lanes as planned earlier.

"Once project is cleared, for next 20-25 years it would resolve problem for Chennai", he said.

ting that project cost would escalate to Rs 5,000 crore from Rs 3,100 crore as planned earlier, Gkari said he suggested to chief minister that GST for steel and cement would be exempted for this project enabling state government to save Rs 500 crore.

"Ar Rs 1,000 crore will be borne by Central government and NHAI," Union minister said.

Asked when project was likely to be completed, Gkari said, "It is up to chief minister to clear proposal." About Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project, he said land acquisition was completed, but COVID-19 pandemic delay commencment of project.

Referring to his last visit to State, Gkari said he h n requsted CM Palaniswami to partner in development of a multi-modal logistics park in Chennai. " state government has agreed to provide land near Chennai that is near Port Trust and (y are) planning to bid it out before January 2021," he said.
