C'garh: Baby elephant rescued from boggy field

A newborn elephant calf which had got stuck in a swampy field was rescued by forest department officials in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district on Friday

A newborn elephant calf which h got stuck in a swampy field was rescued by forest department officials in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district on Friday.

A herd of 21 elephants has been roaming in Fingeshwar forest range of district for last couple of days, said a forest official.

"Around 5 am, we got information that an elephant in herd h given birth to a calf near Bangawa vill and newborn is stuck in marshy field," said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Mayank Agrawal.

"Officials rushed re, but we could t launch a rescue operation immediately as baby elephant's mor was very close," he told PTI.

"As soon as mor elephant retreated into forest, we started our operation. calf was pulled out by 8 am with help of locals," he said.

Veterinarians examined calf on spot and it looked fine, he said.

As herd h moved inside forest, officials were w trying to reunite baby with its family, he said.

On June 16, an elephant from same herd was found de in marshland near in submergence area of Gangrel reservoir in neighbouring Dhamtari district, DFO said.
