What makes Chandrayaan 2 special?

Chandrayaan 1, India's first lunar mission was launched in 2008. It h confirmed presence of water ice on South Pole of Moon. However, what differentiates current mission from previous one is its scope. Chandrayaan 2 seeks to achieve a soft landing on Moon, a feat achieved by only United States of America, Russia, and China. Mission is unique in sense that it seeks to land on Moon's South Polar side. estimated time of landing is after 1.30 am Indian Standard Time (IST) on September 7. Its Lander is named 'Vikram' after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, far of India's  programme. While landing on Moon, it will have a touchdown velocity of 2 m per second. It will function for a period of one lunar day, equivalent to 14 Earth days. Chandrayaan 2's Rover is Pragyan, a six-wheeled robotic vehicle. re are two cameras on Orbiter. While first one is  Orbiter High-Resolution Camera (OHRC) that took pictures of Moon as soon as it reached near it, or camera is Terrain Mapping Camera, which maps surface of Moon and helps prepare 3D maps. total mission time of Orbiter is one year.

Landing difficulty

Landing missions on Moon have h a success rate of only 52%. Israel commissioned last landing mission in April. However, its Lander Beresheet crashed on lunar surface. landing spot for Vikram is between Manzinus C and Simpelius N, two craters near Moon’s South Pole at 70.9°S latitude, 22.7°E longitude. Unlike or Moon Missions, Chandrayaan 2 is more challenging because of fact that it is going to land in rugged territory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will watch  Chandrayaan 2 lunar landing live from control room of Indian Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru.
