Hours after communication from Vikram lander to ground station was lost on early Saturday morning, ISRO has put out an update on Chandrayaan 2 mission. In a statement released by ISRO, Chandrayaan-2 mission has been termed as "a highly complex mission", ding that it represented a significant techlogical leap compared to previous missions of ISRO.

Launched on July 22, Chandrayaan 2 brought toger an Orbiter, Lander, and Rover to explore unexplored south pole of Moon, statement furr said. ISRO said that "it was a unique mission which aimed at studying t just one area of Moon but all areas combining exosphere, surface as well as sub-surface of moon in a single mission".

ISRO updated that Orbiter has alrey been placed in its intended orbit around Moon, and using its eight state-of--art scientific instruments, it shall keep enriching on understanding of moon's evolution and mapping of minerals and water molecules in Polar Regions. It was stated that Orbiter camera is  highest resolution camera (0.3m) in any lunar mission so far. In a major development, ISRO revealed that Orbiter's life span might have increased to almost 7 years inste of planned one year due to precise launch and mission manment.

Updating on Vikram lander, ISRO stated that Lander followed planned descent trajectory from its orbit of 35 km to just below 2 km above surface. "All systems and sensors of Lander functioned excellently until this point and proved many new techlogies such as variable thrust propulsion techlogy used in Lander," statement furr re.

defined success criteria for each and every phase of mission and ded that 90 to 95 per cent of mission objectives have been accomplished till date. It said that mission will keep contributing to Lunar science in spite of loss of communication with Lander.

Orbiter healthy in Lunar orbit

As ISRO official has assured that Chandrayaan-2 orbiter is healthy and safe in Lunar orbit, after Vikram lander lost contact with ground stations minutes before touchdown on Moon's surface early on Saturday. ISRO Chief K Sivan anuncing development stated that data is being analysed of Lander. On September 2, ISRO successfully carried out separation of lander Vikram (with rover Pragyan housed inside) from Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.

PM Modi extends support to ISRO Chief K Sivan

Outside ISRO monitoring centre, PM Narendra Modi consoled ISRO Chairman K Sivan after his speech after he got emotional over Chandrayaan 2 mission's unsuccess. While departing from Centre, K Sivan shook hands with PM Modi and exchanged a few words.
