Citizenship law divisive, against spirit of Constitution: Kamal Nath

In an indication that he will t implement new citizenship law in Mhya Presh, Chief Minister Kamal Nath has said new legislation is "divisive" in nature and "against spirit of Constitution". He also sought to kw why Prime Minister Narendra Modi did t hold talks with chief ministers before Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was drafted.

"I am deeply hurt that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and central government did t even call chief ministers for a talk on such an important issue before drafting CAB," Nath said in a statement issued here late Friday night.
" Congress party has been of view from beginning that any move aimed at dividing Indian culture and society is against spirit of Constitution and is unacceptable to it. Congress party's stand would be our stand in Mhya Presh," he ded.
Earlier, Congress MLA Arif Masood demanded that chief minister reject amended Citizenship Act as well as proposed country-wide National Register of Citizens. Masood, MLA from Bhopal Central constituency, told reporters on Thursday night he would resign as legislator if demand was t fulfilled. Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and by Lok Sabha on Monday.

President's assent to Bill
President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to Bill on Thursday, turning it into an Act. As per Act, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Banglesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014 and facing religious persecution re will t be treated as illegal immigrants but given Indian citizenship.
