New Delhi: Outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who is known for his landmark judgements and eloquent speeches mixed with poetic twist, was at his poetic best when he responded to his trolls by quoting Urdu poet Bashir Br. Quoting famous Urdu poet, CJI trolled trollers in his unique style, saying, "Mukhalfat se meri shakhsiyat sanwarti hai, main dushmano ka ba ehtiraam karta hun (Opposition improves my personality, I respect my enemies a lot)."

CJI Chandrachud was speaking at his farewell event organised by Supreme Court Bar Association, when he talked about his trolls and memes on a lighter note. house burst into laughter when he said, “I am probably most trolled judge across system."

Justice Sanjiv Khanna Will Assume Charge As CJI On November 11

Notably, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will step down on Sunday, November 10, making way for Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Supreme Court's senior-most judge, who will assume charge on Monday, November 11.

On his last working day, outgoing CJI DY Chandrachud dressed criticism with grace, while emphasizing his commitment to transparency, saying, "My shoulders are bro enough to accept all criticism that we have faced”, “sunlight is best disinfectant”. Calling himself one of most trolled figures in judiciary, he lighartedly talked about his detractors, saying, "I'm just wondering what will happen from Monday, because all those who trolled me will be unemployed."

Justice Chandrachud, 50th CJI, assumed office on November 9, 2022, following in footsteps of his far, YV Chandrachud, who served as longest serving Chief Justice from 1978 to 1985.

Reflecting on his reforms, CJI stated, "I just wanted to tell you that some of changes we have me were in pursuance of my strong belief that sunlight is best disinfectant."

Acknowledging that openness invites scrutiny, he said, "When you expose your own life to public knowledge, you expose yourself to criticism, particularly in today's age of social media. But so be it."

Pertinently, CJI Chandrachud faced backlash from Opposition for inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his home for ‘Ganesh Puja’ and for expressing faith in divine intervention for Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.

During a farewell function organized by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), he expressed gratitude for his journey, saying, "We are here as pilgrims, birds for short passage of time, do our work and leave."

He acknowledged importance of leaving a lasting impact, recognizing that institution would continue to thrive beyond his tenure. "None of us is that important to feel that Court will not survive without me," he said.

Justice Chandrachud also highlighted his journey from childhood to he of judiciary, sharing memories and milestones, including serving as Chief Justice of Allahab High Court. Over his eight-year tenure, he set records by sitting in 38 Constitution benches, and he shared that around 1.07 lakh cases were disposed of in last two years, including 21,358 bail matters.
