New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared his personal connection to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute during a recent visit to his native Kanhersar village in Khed taluka, where he was honored by local residents. Speaking on Sunday, Chandrachud revealed that he had prayed to God for a resolution to the longstanding issue.
"Very often we have cases (to adjudicate) but we don't arrive at a solution. Something similar happened during the Ayodhya (Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute) which was in front of me for three months. I sat before the deity and told him he needs to find a solution," he said.
CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of faith, stating, "Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way."
On November 9, 2019, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, delivered a landmark verdict that resolved the issue, allowing for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and designating a five-acre plot for a mosque in the area.
Chandrachud was part of the bench that issued the historic ruling and had visited the Ram Temple in Ayodhya in July this year to offer prayers. The idol consecration ceremony took place on January 22, 2024, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.
As the CJI reflects on the resolution of the Ayodhya dispute, he continues to advocate for faith as a guiding principle in seeking solutions to complex legal matters.
