Study says new antiviral drug combo highly effective against COVID-19

According to a new study published recently in the journal Nature, combining the antiviral remdesivir or molnupiravir with the experimental drug brequinar blocks the reproduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, that causes COVID-19, in lung cells and in mice.

Identifying combinations of antivirals is really important, not only because doing so may increase the drugs' potency against the coronavirus, but combining drugs also reduces the risk of resistance,” said study principal investigator Sara Cherry, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, as per PTI.

They screened 18,000 drugs in search of antiviral activity, using live SARS-CoV-2 infection in human respiratory cells, because lungs are the major target for the virus.

The researchers identified 122 drugs that showed antiviral activity and selectivity against the coronavirus, including 16 nucleoside analogs, the largest category of antivirals that are used clinically.

Can You Get Long COVID After An Infection With Omicron?

It’s too early to know for sure, but many doctors believe it’s possible to have long-term effects from the omicron variant of the virus.

Long COVID is usually diagnosed many weeks after a bout with COVID-19. Any long-lasting effects typically appear about 90 days after symptoms of the initial infection go away, Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organization said this week.

Overall, some estimates suggest more than a third of COVID-19 survivors will develop some symptoms of long COVID. Symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, anxiety and other problems. The lingering illness is more likely if you’ve been hospitalized with COVID-19, but research shows it can happen even after a mild infection.

Omicron began its race around the world late last year. The variant generally causes milder illness than the delta version of the coronavirus but has still overwhelmed hospitals.

Van Kerkhove said she hasn’t seen any research indicating that the portion of COVID-19 survivors who get long COVID will change with the omicron variant.

Dr Linda Geng of Stanford University, who co-directs one of the many clinics specializing in long COVID, said that though she can’t say for sure, a new wave of patients is likely.

“We have to be very cautious and very careful and prepared,” Geng said.

WHO Says COVID Still 'dangerous' As Death Toll Surpasses 500,000 Since Omicron Detection

World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday said that 500,000 COVID-19 deaths had been registered since the Omicron variant was discovered. Calling it “beyond tragic”, WHO incident manager Abdi Mahamud said that around 130 million coronavirus infections and half a million deaths had been recorded across the globe since the Omicron (B.1.1.529) was declared as a variant of concern by the United Nations (UN) health agency.

The Omicron variant, first flagged by South African health experts in November, has since then rapidly taken over Delta as the world’s dominant COVID-19 variant because it is more transmissible even though it appears to cause mild illness. In a live interaction on WHO’s social media channels, the WHO incident manager lamented that with the COVID-19 vaccines being developed and still 500,000 deaths occurring is “really something.”

He added, “While everyone was saying Omicron is milder, (they) missed the point that half a million people have died since this was detected.”

COVID-19: In US, Omicron Variant Detected In White-tailed Deer, First Among Wild Animals

The highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been discovered in white-tailed deer on Staten Island in the United States (US), marking the first time the variant has been detected in wild animals. The recent development adds to a growing body of data that the virus is easily transmitted to white-tailed deer. The findings are likely to heighten fears that deer, which are widely distributed across the United States and live in close proximity to humans, could serve as a virus reservoir and a source of new COVID variants.

The coronavirus was earlier reported to be widespread in deer in Iowa in late 2020 and areas of Ohio in early 2021, according to researchers. According to Lyndsay Cole, a spokesperson for the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, infections in deer have been confirmed in 13 more states: Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Virginia and Tennessee. However, these animals had been infected with the older variants of COVID.

COVID-19: Italy To Abolish Mandatory Wearing Of Face Masks Outdoors As Cases Fall

Italy is all set to remove the COVID-19 mandatory rule of wearing face masks in all outdoor places from Friday, 11 February as the nation witnesses a decline in the number of infections. The announcement regarding the new measure planned by the health ministry has been confirmed by deputy health minister Andrea Costa, Local Italy reported, citing Italian news agency Ansa. Presently, people in Italy were mandated to wear face masks in all indoor and outdoor public places, as per the directive issued last year in December following the rise in COVID-19 cases fueled by the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

The removal of the mask mandate was earlier expected in low risk 'white' zones only. However, Andrea Costa has now informed that the government has decided to remove the mask-wearing rule in outdoor places regardless of the region's COVID-19 risk classification under the four-tiered system, as per The Local Italy report. According to Costa, the rule no longer applies to the people who have been vaccinated under a new decree in force from 5 February.
