COVID-19: 50,000 brick kiln workers stranded in Jammu; Lt Guv sets up Economic Task Force

Jammu and Kashmir government constituted a Task Force, headed by Financial Commissioner to restore economic activity and employment in the Union Territory

Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday constituted a Task Force to restore ecomic activity and employment in Union Territory. Task Force will be heed by Financial Commissioner, Principal Secretaries and Commissioner Secretaries of all departments. Lt Goverr Girish Chander Murmu said that a committee has alrey been constituted for resumption of commercial and industrial activity in a controlled manner.

Government of India (GoI) is also issuing guidelines by Wednesday, and steps would be taken to facilitate tre and industry accordingly, he ded.

During a meeting with trers and representatives of various associations, Lt Goverr was informed that due to lockdown, around 50,000 labourers working in brick kiln units across Jammu were left stranded. Request was me to allow operations of brick kiln units as stocks of bricks have also reportedly exhausted. Lt Goverr, while interacting with representatives of associations, assured m that all genuine demands and issues projected by m would be looked into on priority.

Demands to allow several activities amid lockdown

Trers and representatives of various associations also demanded that operations of industrial units must be allowed and y assured that equate precautionary guidelines like sanitization, social distancing and hygiene will be maintained as per COVID-19 rms.

Opening of stationery shops and preparing a mechanism to provide school books and study materials to facilitate students; besides preponement of summer vacations and allowing overdraft facility to private schools were also demanded.

y also put forth several demands pertaining to treatment of n-COVID patients; hiring of SRTC trucks for transportation of essentials from outside UT by trers; supply of ration to daily earners; entry of heavy vehicles during day time; installation of sanitization tunnels in high footfall areas like sabzi mandis, warehouses etc.
