Hitting out at BJP-led Centre over National Population Register (NPR), Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said that government is "contricting its stance on same".

Yechury said, "y are doing NPR upgration and have ded ditional criteria. y are also asking for information on twenty-one hes. w it has been said nine times that NPR will be basis on which National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be created. w, this is something government itself h stated. Whatever Prime Minister is claiming on NPR was t discussed with us."

Sitaram Yechury, an outspoken critic of Citizenship Amendment Act and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), questioned wher NRC will be on basis of NPR. "What is its final objective?" he asked.
PM Modi 'rattled' by anti-CAA protests
Earlier, Yechury accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of speaking "a bundle of untruths" during his rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on December 22. CPI-M said that PM was "rattled" by protests against CAA and declaration of several Chief Ministers that y will t implement NRC. In a statement, party politburo said protests against CAA and NRC will continue till government stops ongoing process.

At least 18 people have died in Uttar Presh due to violence during ant-CAA protests, around a thousand have been arrested and many ors booked. In wake of violent protests, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried to calm situation by assuring that CAA will t affect a single India citizen irrespective of religion. Despite PM Modi's mess, protests continued across country in full swing.
