Delhi Police on Sunday evening has arrested one suspect on the woman journalist assault case that happened in Chittaranjan Park in Delhi on September 22. “One suspect has been apprehended. He has given vital clues for the recovery of case property,” DCP (South Delhi) Atul Thakur told ANI.

The incident
On September 22, the victim had gone shopping near Chittaranjan Park and was returning back at around 6 pm in an auto-rickshaw. At this juncture, two bike-borne miscreants came close to her auto-rickshaw when the traffic movement was slow. The robbers dragged her out of the moving auto-rickshaw as they snatched her phone and managed to flee the spot, leaving the woman journalist with injuries on her face and hands. She was initially taken to a nearby hospital as she was bleeding profusely. Later, she was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Caught on CCTV
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has condemned the incident and expressed hope that the culprits would get the strictest punishment.
"I got to know about an incident where a woman journalist from ANI (Asian News International) was attacked by chain snatchers. It is very unfortunate and saddening. I hope culprits get the strictest punishment. All of us together need to work to reduce the crime incidents in Delhi," Kejriwal observed.

While the police registered an FIR and formed a special team to probe the matter on Monday, it suspended an assistant sub-inspector and two constables for inaction a day later. Subsequently, they revealed that the suspects had been caught on the CCTV camera.

Police had earlier said that they were analysing the CCTV footage to identify the accused involved in the case and ascertain the sequence of events. Special teams were formed to nab the culprits involved in the incident, the officer added.
According to police data, there has been a decline in snatching incidents over the last three years. In 2017, 6,466 snatching cases were registered, in 2018, 4,707 cases while till September 15, 4,516 cases of snatching were registered.
