Bandra mob gathering: Cyber Cell identifies persons responsible for spreading fake news

The Maharashtra Cyber Cell announced that more than 30 accounts spreading fake news leading to Tuesday's Bandra mob gathering incident had been identified.

In a massive development, Maharashtra Cyber Cell on Wednesday anunced that more than 30 accounts spreing fake news leing to Bandra mob garing incident h been identified. This includes a news channel responsible for perpetuating rumour about resumption of train services. More details about persons operating se accounts have been informed to concerned police units. 

state Cyber Cell, in a press release, revealed that it was continuously working to stop fake news on social media pertaining to COVID-19 as per directive of Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. After fake news is detected, Cyber Cell traces location of users and asks district police in that region to take legal action. Until April 14, 201 cases have been registered in this regard across state leing to arrest of 35 persons. Dr.Balsing Rajput, SP Cyber urged citizens to desist from spreing fake news and hate speech.

More than a thousand persons gared near Bandra Railway station in Mumbai on Tuesday afteron flouting social distancing rms of nationwide lockdown. According to former AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan, persons were migrant workers who std a protest demanding permission to return to ir hometown. y allegedly assembled after rumours spre about possibility of commencement of trains. Reportedly, a journalist of a regional news channel misinterpreted an internal communication of Railways and reported that special trains for migrants would be run.

re was also an attempt to arrange ration for people who h gared. However, as chaos persisted, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse crowd. Taking cognizance of incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Subsequently, latter reassured migrant workers in his dress and cautioned against politicisation of incident.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police registered an FIR in this matter against 800-1000 unkwn accused persons. Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149, 186(obstructing public servant in discharge of his public functions), 188 (disobedience to order promulgated by public servant) of Indian Penal Code and Section 3 (disobeying order under this Act) of Epidemic Act have been invoked. ditionally, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh promised strict action against those indulged in rumour-mongering. On Wednesday, television journalist who allegedly gave incorrect report regarding commencement of trains was detained.
