Cops prevent child marriage in Maharashtra

Police in Jalna district of Maharashtra prevented a child marriage, after they counselled a 13-year-old girl's parents against marrying her off, an official said on Sunday.

Police in Jalna district of Maharashtra prevented a child marri, after y counselled a 13-year-old girl's parents against marrying her off, an official said on Sunday.

Pallavi Jhav, district chief of police's Damini Pathak, said that on vember 10 she h received a call from girl, a resident of Tembhurni in Jafrab tehsil, who said that her parents were forcing her to marry a 28-year-old man and marri was to be held on vember 27.

"On vember 11, we approached parents of girl, who studies in Class VIII, and told m that child marri is illegal and y will have to face action. y agreed at that time," she said.

"However, a few days later, girl again called and told us that her parents were w forcing her to tie kt secretly. police again went to her place and warned m.

After counselling, her parents agreed that y would marry her off when she turns 18 and till that time, y will let her study," Jhav ded.

police are in touch with girl after that, she said.
