Delhi HC issues notice to Flipkart, Amazon; seeks Centre's stand on listing goods' country-of-origin

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought response of the Centre on a plea seeking directions to it to ensure that the name of the manufacturing country is displayed on products being sold on e-commerce sites.

Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought response of Centre on a plea seeking directions to it to ensure that name of manufacturing country is displayed on products being sold on e-commerce sites. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan issued tice to Centre and e-commerce platforms Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal seeking ir stand on plea by July 22.

Central government's standing counsel Ajay Digpaul accepted tice on behalf of Ministry of Consumer Affairs. plea by a lawyer has sought implementation of Legal Metrology Act 2009 and rules framed under it which mandate that country of origin has to be displayed on products being sold on e-commerce websites. petition has claimed that mandate was t being enforced with respect to e-commerce entities.

It has contended that enforcement of mandate was important in current scenario when citizens intend to comply with central government's appeal to promote and purchase Indian goods and t from some neighbouring countries. refore, it was essential that country of origin is displayed on products being sold on e-commerce platforms, petition has said.
