Jaya Bachchan slams delay in Nirbhaya rapists' hanging; laments juvenile convict's release

After the hanging of 4 convicts in the Nirbhaya case, SP MP Jaya Bachchan opined that the delay in getting justice was tantamount to justice being denied.

Following hanging of 4 convicts in Nirbhaya rape and murder case, Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan expressed her dissatisfaction at manner of development. She opined that  delay in execution of convicts was tantamount to justice being denied. Moreover, she lamented fact that one convict was released in 2015 as he was a juvenile. reafter, Bachchan questioned wher released convict’s intentions had changed over a period of time.

Nirbhaya convicts hanged

Earlier in day, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Akshay Kumar Singh- convicts in Nirbhaya case were hanged till death at 5.30 am. This was first time that 4 individuals were executed toger in Tihar jail.  execution of death warrant was carried out after multiple attempts by rapists to escape gallows. Despite exhausting all legal remedies including curative and mercy petitions, AP Singh- counsel for convicts tried obtaining relief from  Patiala House Court, Delhi High Court, Supreme Court, National Human Rights Commission and even International Court of Justice in last few days. Finally, fate of convicts was sealed after Delhi HC and  apex court dismissed pleas to stay ir execution in late-night hearings.

What is Nirbhaya rape and murder case? 

A 23-year-old paramedic student Nirbhaya was gang-raped inside a running bus by six persons on December 16, 2012, in Delhi. victim was severely assaulted and thrown out on road along with her male friend and succumbed to injuries a few days later. Out of six convicts, one reportedly committed suicide in prison, while ar, a juvenile, served maximum punishment of three years in a reform home and was set free in 2015.  remaining four rapists were convicted and handed death penalty by a trial court in 2013, confirmed by Delhi High Court in March 2014. Supreme Court upheld Delhi High Court's verdict in 2017.
