In a shocking development, a massive attack has been reported inside Delhi's JNU campus on Sunday. Sources report that the a mob of masked persons have gathered inside the campus armed with lathis and rods, hitting at students and faculty members. JNU Student union president Aishe Ghosh has also been grievously injured. JNUSU has claimed that ABVP is behind the attacks. Heavy police presence has been reported in and outside the campus.

JNUSU statement:

"Right Now ABVP has gathered in huge numbers in Sabarmati Dhaba in JNU armed with lathis and rods. They are breaking glasses of hostels and cars. Since Yesterday they have been doing rampage in JNU to threaten students protesting against fee-hike. Several students including JNUSU President Aishi and JNUSU Gen Sec Satish Chandra Yadav are wounded. Right now, the ABVP goons from outside JNU have entered the campus."

JNU server room attacked

The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration said students agitating over the hike in hostel fees "ransacked" the server room and "intimidated" the technical staff on Saturday, hampering the semester registration process. But JNUSU said the administration used "masked" security guards to attack students. "They were shamefully wearing masks. JNUSU president was openly slapped by one of the security guards," alleged the students' union, which has called for a boycott of the process over the increase in hostel fees.

JNU protests

Students have been protesting since November against the fee hike in the university. On November 18, hundreds of JNU students took to the streets to march to the Parliament, demanding a full rollback of the hostel fees. Flouting section 144 applied in JNU, students marched towards the parliament where the Winter Session had commenced. Over 1400 Police personnel who were deployed stopped agitating students and around 100 students had been detained for showing ‘'aggressive defiance”. In the evening, the police forcibly removed the JNU student protesters, who had brought civic life and traffic to a standstill. HRD officials have talked with representatives and are yet to announce a full rollback of fees. Partial roll back has been announced already.

Why are the students protesting?

The students' union has been on a strike against the Draft Hostel Manual which was approved by the Inter-Hall Administration. They claim that the manual has provisions for fee hike, curfew timings and dress code restrictions for students. They have said they will not end the strike till the Hostel Manual is withdrawn. It is said that after the fee hike is implemented, JNU will be the most expensive Central University. 
 

JNUSU has claimed that professors who were trying to protect them have also been beaten up. The mob is allegedly moving towards the hostels near the West Gate.

"Stay alert. Make human chains. Protect each other," stated JNUSU. Their president Aishe Ghosh has released a video in which she is seen profuously bleeding from the head, saying, "  I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up."

Meanwhile, ABVP has also claimed that  their presidential candidate Manish Jangid has also been beaten up and has been admitted in AIIMS hospital. Sources report that over 25 students have been injured in the attack.

Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad members have been brutally attacked by students affiliated to leftist student organizations SFI, AISA and DSF. Around 25 students have been seriously injured in this attack and there is no information as to the whereabouts of 11 students. Many ABVP members are being attacked in hostels and the hostels are being vandalized by the leftist goons.

Meanwhile, Delhi police have reportedly barricaded from outside and are waiting outside the campus. Traffic has been stopped on the roads leading to JNU campus. Delhi Government has dispatched seven ambulances to Jawaharlal Nehru University, 10 ambulances at standby.

Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav has been stopped from entering the campus at the main gate by Delhi police.

He said, "Police is stopping me from entering the campus, but are aiding the ABVP goons in hitting the students inside. The police are allowing the goons to enter the campus and attack students, but will  not allow me and media to go inside to know what is happening. JNUSU president, JNU faculty has been attacked and they are bleeding brutally. But Delhi police will not do anything."

Moreover, HRD MoS Sanjay Dhotre has condemned Yogendra Yadav's comments. He said that Delhi police will not indulge in violence. He added that the reason for this attack is unknown.

Sources report that JNU ABVP president Durgesh Kumar has alleged that the due to attack on the server hub in the campus, ABVP's online registration has been stalled. To protest against this act, ABVP protestors had allegedly protested at the Swami Vivekanand Statue in the campus during the day, as per sources. He has further claimed that a mob has attacked students by going into their hostels after they had dispersed from that area.

Meanwhile visuals outside the campus show a heavy presence of police officers. Lights on roads leading to the campus are off as seen in several visuals. A huge crowd of students mainly from ABVP have gathered outside and are currently protesting against the violence shouting 'Bharat Mata hi jai'.

• JNU states that Winter semester registration was disrupted by a group of students on January 3, when they entered the Communication and Information Services (CIS) premises, covering their faces with masks and forcibly evicted the technical staff and made the servers disfunctional.

• Moreover, JNU stated that on January 5, when the students who have registered in the winter semester wanted to enter these school buildings, they were physically prevented by the agitating students. Around 4.30 PM, a group of students, who are against the registration process moved aggressively from the front of the admin block and reached the hostels.

• It added that by the time police came, the students who are for the registration were beaten up by a
  group of agitating students opposting the registration. JNU adminitration will not tolerate any form of violence on the campus. A police complaint is being filed to bring the culprits to book.

Delhi Police has released a report on the incident:

First round of clashes took place post noon on Sunday between students (from left and right wing). Violence escalated and went out of control after 5 pm when "outsiders" entered the campus and attacked students and faculty members inside the campus. This attack saw "outsiders" who had covered and masked their faces with scarves and mufflers.

Protestors entered the hostel and attacked students, faculty members and damaged campus properities and cars. Among those damanged includes cars, hostel window panes, furniture. University authorities have been asked to take stock of the situation and submit a report to the police regarding this. Preliminary statements of students that have been recorded reveals that students have alleged that "outsiders" who had masked themselves were moving in the campus and  intimidating students and threatening them. 

Efforts are being made to identify them which will be done after recording statements of those injured, private guards, faculty members and others. Students have also complained about “outsiders” entering the university through one of the back gates, which is being probed as well. The police is scanning the CCTV footage to identify the miscreants.

Police confirmed that the JNU administration in a written permission requested the intervention of the police to restore peace and law and order inside the campus. But this happened much later full blown violence happened. First call asking for cops took place post 6:30 pm whereas clashes started at 5 pm. The police entered the campus and conducted flag marches in an attempt to restore calm and prevent repeat of violent protest.

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said," The Leftist narrative is false. The stress was ongoing since yesterday. ABVP was asking for registration. Wi-Fi connection was cut off by left students to prevent them from online registration. I have met 2-3 girls who have sustained injuries at different parts. Parents took them away. One has lost his memory. See how these people are creating ruckus outside hospital. I am in touch with police. They said the miscreants came, assaulted and went away. Students said that on the call of left, they came. They believe that some from Jamia also came."

She added, " Dont do violence and indulge others in the same. Jamia guys are coming there. Such people should be barred from Twitter as they are causing chaos and anarchy. They know CAA is not an issue. When they lose, they do this."

Former PM of Nepal, Baburam Bhattarai, who also happens to be an ex-student of JNU extended his solidarity with the students of the university and called for protecting the "holy temple of learning". 

The students protesting within JNU were seen raising 'Delhi police, go back' slogans within the varsity during the police flag march. 

The Jamia Coordination Committee from the Jamia Millia Islamia University condemned the violence in JNU and said that they demand action against the "goons" who unleashed violence in the varsity.

A delegation of students and teachers from Jawarharlal Nehru Univerity university met the Delhi Police PRO M S Randhawa after violence broke out at their campus on Sunday night. Teachers and students from Delhi University were also a part of the delegation. They submitted an application to the Delhi Police PRO with four demands, including urgent medical assistance to injured students and arrest of the accused behind the violence.  

The President of Federation of Central University Teachers' associations, Rajib Ray, who was also a part of the meeting said, "The police have assured us that they will look into the matter and our demands."

Four non-JNU students were apprehended by police after the violence that erupted within the campus. These outsiders were trying to escape from JNU's North Gate when they were caught and taken to the Vasant Kunj police station for interrogation. 

As per sources, a delegation of five students was given protection by the police as they headed back to the JNU campus from AIIMS hospital. They were within the Police Headquarters till 3:30 am. Sources also reveal that Jamia students have formed two fact-finding committees to probe the JNU violence. However, as the committee will be constituted by students their probe will have no legal value. 

Mayawati took to Twitter and said, "Violence with students and teachers in JNU is highly condemnable and shameful. The central government should take this incident very seriously. Also, it will be better if there is a judicial inquiry into this incident."

Communist Party of India (CPI) (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury has said that the police has assured actions against the perpetrators of violence in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus after meeting Delhi Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) MS Randhawa on Monday.

"The police has said that they will gather the evidence and assured us that they will take action against the perpetrators of violence in JNU. They are going to file an FIR in this regard," Yechury said. 

Congress leader and senior advocate Salman Khurshid while talking about JNU violence on Monday said that the during Jamia incident, police entered the campus without permission and attacked the students. Then why have the police not entered the JNU campus? It's clear, who is the reason behind this. JNU is the main focus for them.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik about the situation at JNU and ordered an inquiry by a senior police officer into the violence that broke out on Sunday night, officials said. The Home Ministry further sought a report from the Delhi Police about the situation prevailing in the prestigious institution and the steps taken to restore peace.

BSP supremo on Monday condemned the acts of violence and said that a judicial inquiry of the incident should be done.

More students from various colleges in Mumbai joined the protest at the Gateway of India on Monday morning to condemn the violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. The students shouted slogans condemning the violence. Earlier, as the protest began on Sunday midnight, a group of students held a candlelight vigil to show solidarity with the JNU students.

Youngsters, mostly students from different colleges in Mumbai, assembled on the pavement across the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel near the Gateway of India to condemn the violence. It was an "impromptu assembly at a short notice", a student said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan called the JNU violence a 'planned' attempt to silence universities.  In a tweet, he said, "The attack on students & faculty of JNU is an appalling display of intolerance running amok. The scale of the attack reveals the extent of planning. Sangh Parivar must end this diabolical plan to silence universities with bloodshed. Remember, those students are speaking for all."

The meeting is currently underway at Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal's residence over the JNU campus violence on Sunday night. Senior AAP leaders and Delhi Ministers are present in the meeting. 

As per ANI sources, FIR registered in connection with violence in JNU on Sunday. 23 students who were admitted to the hospital have been discharged. Devendra Arya, DCP of South-West Delhi, apprised about the registration of FIR and further stated that social media and CCTV footages will be part of the investigation.

Jagadesh Kumar called for peace and asserted that the top priority of the University is to protect the academic interests of the students. The Congress on Monday morning blamed the BJP government for the attack on JNU students by masked miscreants, terming it a "state-sponsored goondism" and "terrorism"

Randeep Surjewala said, "The entire country witnessed state-sponsored goondism and terrorism yesterday in the campus of JNU. All this happened under the watch of JNU administration and also Delhi Police which is directly controlled by Home Minister Amit Shah."

In the backdrop of violence that took place in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal requesting him to meet representatives from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and hold talks, said ANI sources. The Secretary of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has also called the Registrar, Proctor and Rector of JNU to his office.

Trinamool delegation led by Dinesh Trivedi  and comprising Sajda Ahmed (MP), Manas Bhunia (MP), Vivek Gupta, who went to express solidarity with students, stopped at Gate Number 1 (North Gate) of JNU by Delhi police.

Dinesh Trivedi said," We are protesting in Gandhian style and protesting peacefully, they've stopped us because they fear Mamata ji, those who attacked JNU last night are terrorists because only terrorists come putting mask on thier face. We demand that a neutral investigation should be carried out like it happens in a terrorist attack."

Delhi Police: Around 700 police personnel have been deployed outside the gates of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), reports ANI.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Federation (JNUTF) stands with the JNU students, faculty and staff and their families in this hour of crisis and would like to work with them in restoring normalcy in the JNU campus, said the association in a press release.

Anil Kapoor said," What happend is shocking.  I did not sleep the entire night. Whomsoever involved should be punished."

JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh wo suffered a head injury in Sunday's attacks in JNU addresses protestors and press at JNU:

"For the last few days we are running a movement against fee hike. I would like to say that stdents of Jamia and AMU have been assualted brutally. RSS goons, RSS affiliated professors and ABVP people have organised the attack.Yesterday's incident did not happen in isolation. The administration tried to break the movement and unity of students."

She added, "ABVP was of the opinion that they will not go for the boycott and will instead go for registration. JNU VC and administration planned this and sent goons. By evening 300-400 students had gathered and having tea. A group of people with rods, hockey sticks started coming.  A couple of students were attacked first. The JNUSU decided to inform the nearest police station. I texted the SHO and ACP for help. I had communicated with the police personally. They said that the people have been removed from the area"

Recalling her ordeal, JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said," People wearing black masks surrounded us. An iron rod was thrashed on my head.They were about to lynch us. They were abusing. There is a clear nexus of the internal security. JNU is our home. RSS cannot take it away from us. You cannot break us. This fight will go on."

Slamming the VC for his inaction, she added, " Had the VC some morality, he should have resigned now. I am not going to tolerate this brutality. We will ensure that he steps down and urge the HRD to see he resigns. Do this hooliganism in Nagpur, this is not the place." 

Attending the protest at Mumbai's Gateway of India against the JNU violence, AIMIM National spokesperson Waris Pathan said to Republic TV there was nothing wrong in what Uddhav Thackeray said.

"The situation happened in JNU is not less than terrorist attack. Modi and Amit Shah is held responsible."

Crime Branch to investigate: Police

A day after the violence ensued in Delhi's JNU campus, Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa, on Monday, briefed the media saying that the Crime branch will be investigating the incident. He stated that the police received a call at 5 PM about a scuffle between students and they responded immediately. The scuffle which was on the JNU registration had been ongoing for the past few days, he added. Narrating the sequence of events, he said that the Delhi police which could be deployed only in the Admin block could not enter the area of the scuffle which was mainly in the hostels.

"Yesterday around 5 PM, Delhi police received a call that there is a scuffle between JNU students. Delhi police responded at the same time. An FIR has been registered in this case. The crime branch will investigate the case," he said.

Moreover, he revealed that JNU administration allowed them to enter the campus after 7:30 PM and conducted a flag march, taking the situation under control. He added, " CCTV footage is being collected and Crime Branch will investigate headed by a DCP rank who has already found vital clues. 34 were injured and have been discharged from the hospital. Delhi police have constituted a fact-finding committee under the chairmanship of the Joint CP (Western range) Shalini Singh."

Details of the JNU violence FIR

The FIR mentions that the police was first intimated at 3.45 pm that some JNU students had reached Periyar hostel and were damaging public property. When the police personnel reached the spot, they discovered that 40-50 masked miscreants were beating up students and ransacking the place. However, they fled after realising the advent of the police. 

According to the FIR, the police also received a request from the JNU administration in the interim period and more forces were brought in to maintain law and order. Thereafter, yet another incident of hooliganism was reported from the Sabarmati hostel at 7 pm. After reaching the location, the police found that 50-60 miscreants were beating the students and destroying property at the Sabarmati hostel. Soon, the police managed to bring the situation under control.

Protests against the JNU violence which have been witnessed in Mumbai since Sunday night took a bizarre turn when 'Free Kashmir' posters were witnessed on Monday. Visuals from the Gateway of India where thousands have gathered a woman carrying a 'Free Kashmir' poster. Posters proclaiming 'Ban ABVP' and several Indian tricolour flags too were spotted at the site.
