JNU Vandalism : Delhi Police file FIR; 10 students named for property defacement

Cracking down on miscreants, Delhi police has lodged an FIR on Sunday, in the 'defacement of public property' at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The police have named ten students in the FIR under section 3 of Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act. JNU had filed two complaints against vandals who had defaced the campus and desecrated the soon-to-be-unveiled statue of Vivekananda. They were also seeking legal opinion on the matter for possible charges to be filed against the miscreants.

Police probing evidence, miscreants narrowed

Police who had registered the first complaint on Friday have formed an elite team of senior police officers. They have reportedly identified seven JNU students who had defaced the Vice Chancellor's office with objectionable remarks. The same team will now probe the incidents on the second complaint about the Vivekananda statue.

JNU admin to take action

Earlier on Thursday, a soon-to-be-unveiled statue of Swami Vivekananda on JNU campus was vandalised as student protests continued over the hostel fee hike despite a partial rollback. JNU released an official statement condemning the act and has assured strict action against the culprits. The statue, which is covered in saffron cloth, is located at the university’s administrative block. Meanwhile, JNUSU has distanced itself from the attack maintaining that that their movement is against the fee hike and the imposition of a draft hostel manual without consultation.

Azadi video emerges

An undated video reportedly from the JNU campus has emerged, which shows students allegedly raising slogans of 'Azadi' once again, bringing back the memories of the 2016 episode which is currently sub judice. The video showing a group of students allegedly raising 'Azadi' slogans on the campus, comes at a time when the students of the have been staging a protest against the fees hike. Republic Media Network does not vouch for the authenticity of the video and the date is yet to be ascertained. The students are not happy with the partial rollback in hostel fees and other charges announced by the JNU administration on Wednesday and want a full rollback.
