Union Minister of Mirity Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Friday chaired a meeting at his residence in view of protests against Citizenship Amendment Act across country. meeting was attended by BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, National Commission for Mirities (NCM) Chairman Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi, and several or leaders. Earlier on Thursday, Naqvi slammed Opposition on Thursday for allegedly creating a divisive environment and misleading people over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Population Register (NPR).

Naqvi slams opposition
Talking about opposition’s stand on NRC, CAA, and NPR, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “y were first opposing citizenship act, n y started a fake and fabricated narrative on National Register of Citizens (NRC) and w y are raising questions on NPR. ir intention is to mislead people and create a divisive environment in country for political gains. y are misleading people and weakening unity of country. CAA does t revoke citizenship of an Indian. t to mention, when UPA government brought NPR in 2010, y (Congress) celebrated development.”

' opposition will regret': Naqvi
Union Minister said that opposition parties will regret opposing NPR in future. Additionally, Naqvi urged people to maintain peace and said that re is place for violence in society. He again clarified that CAA is only about granting citizenship to persecuted mirities in neighbouring countries.
He furr said that opposition is running out of credible issues to target Central government. Also, amidst ongoing protests in country, many states have declared that y will t implement CAA in ir state. n-Congress ruled states of West Bengal and Kerala have also said y won’t conduct NPR.

What is CAA and NPR?
CAA seeks to provide citizenship to mirity communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This will be applicable to members of se communities having arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. re have been a series of protests against this legislation across country.

On or hand, NPR is a register of usual residents of country being prepared at local (vill/sub-town), sub-district, district, state, and national level under provisions of Citizenship Act 1955 and Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. Under NPR, a usual resident is defined as a person who has resided in a local area for past six months or more or a person who intends to reside in that area for next six months or more.
