Rajiv Gandhi Assassination: Pardon for Perarivalan to be decided by TN Guv in 3-4 days
This development comes after the bench headed by Justice L. Nageswara Rao expressed 'unhappiness' over Perarivalan's long-pending remission recommendation

Pardon for convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, A.G. Perarivalan will be decided by Tamil Nadu Goverr within 3-4 days, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said in Supreme Court on Thursday. As per SG, Goverr Banwari Lal Purohit will decide remission of Perarivalan's sentence "as per Constitution", exercising his discretionary power under Article 161. This decision would be taken within next 3-4 days.
"I have received instructions to tell Your Lordships that we have received information from Goverr of State of Tamil Nadu that he will decide issue as per Constitution within next 3-4 days," placed SG Tushar Mehta before court.
This development comes after bench headed by Justice L. Nswara Rao expressed 'unhappiness' over Perarivalan's long-pending remission recommendation, which had first been made by Tamil Nadu state government back in 2018. After listening to submission by SG Mehta, top court listed matter after 4 weeks.

Perarivalan's remission plea
plea pertains to 46-year-old Perarivalan who is seeking suspension of his life sentence in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case till MDMA probe is completed. A G Perarivalan, Nalini, her husband Murugan, T. Sundraraja, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, and P Ravichandran are seven convicts in assassination case who have been in prison for over 30 years.
Last year in vember, top court had expressed unhappiness over pendency of Perarivalan's pardon before Tamil Nadu Goverr for over 2 years. CBI had also asserted that it had role as far as relief was concerned stating, "It is for His Excellency Goverr of Tamil Nadu to take a call on issue wher remission is to be granted or t and in so far as relief is concerned in present matter CBI has role. Present petitioner is t subject matter of furr investigation carried out by MDMA…”

reafter, Perarivalan was granted parole from vember 9 to vember 23 by Madras High Court on 'medical grounds.' This was later extended by top court by one week.
