SC calls for urgent Centre & State govt action into pollution crisis

Supreme Court, on Monday has called for an urgent action to deal with the air pollution crisis in North India from the Delhi govt and the Central government

Justice Mishra asks Delhi govt, "What are you achieving from Odd-Even scheme?", to which state's counsel has replied, "Diesel consumption is less and re is less pollution in Delhi. People will share vehicles". Apart from pulling up Kejriwal government, apex court has stated to Haryana and Punjab governments that Gram pradhans, local officials, police who do t control burning should be removed from ir posts. Justice Mishra also observed that condition in Delhi is 'worse than an emergency w'.


Taking up issue of pollution in capital and or parts of rth India, Supreme Court, on Monday has called for urgent action to deal with crisis from Delhi government and Centre. apex court ted that Delhi was experiencing a similar choking situation for 10-15 days every year. It also slammed both state and Centre on inaction with respect to pollution saying that y were only passing buck to each or.

Supreme Court demands state and Centre action

Supreme Court ted that 'people could t survive in city if pollution crisis is t solved'. Addressing counsels of Punjab and Haryana, Justice Arun Mishra said, "Right to life is most important right. 'We want to burn our crop and let ors die' - we can't live like this."

After consulting with experts and ministry officials, Supreme Court is scheduled to pass detailed orders shortly. apex court has called upon an expert from IIT Delhi and ministry to suggest measures.  bench called pollution in Delhi-NCR as atrocious and said one is safe even inside homes.

Delhi emergency declared

Earlier on Friday, a Supreme Court-mandated panel declared a public health emergency in Delhi-NCR region and banned construction activity till vember 5. As pollution level in region entered "severe-plus" category, Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority also banned bursting of crackers during winter season. air quality in Delhi-NCR deteriorated furr Thursday night to severe-plus level, triggering an Emergency.

Odd-Even Scheme kicks in

Meanwhile, Delhi government's odd-even scheme came into implementation on Monday. Under scheme, apart from exempted categories, only those n-transport four-wheeled vehicles will ply on roads which have registration numbers ending with an even digit. Violations of odd-even rule will invite a fine of Rs 4,000  Under scheme, which is w implemented and will be in place till 8 pm, n-transport four-wheeled vehicles with registration numbers ending with an odd digit (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) will t be allowed on roads on vember 4, 6, 8, 12 and 14. Similarly, vehicles with registration numbers ending with an even digit (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) will t be allowed on roads on vember 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15.
