Shaheen Bagh protests: SC asks Centre to suggest other sites, asks adv Hegde to mediate

Supreme Court on Monday asked advocate Sanjay Hegde to talk to protestors at Shaheen Bagh and try to persuade them to shift protest, asks Centre to suggest site

In a massive development, Supreme Court on Monday appointed vocate Sanjay Hegde as an interlocutor to talk to protestors at Shaheen Bagh and try to persue m on shifting protest site, while hearing petitions seeking clearance of Kalindi Kunj ro which has remained blocked for over 60 days on account of anti-CAA protest at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh. Moreover, apex court has also asked Centre to look into alternative protest sites like Ramlila Maidan, Janta Mantar, Lal Quila as such. While Hegde has suggested Justice Kurian Joseph to aide him in mediation, court has appointed vocate Shna Ramakrishnan as second interlocutor. Next hearing will be held on Monday.

SC asks Centre to suggest alternate protest sites

apex court expressed concerns over blocking of ros While Court ackwledged citizens' right to protest, court has questioned blocking of ros during protests. Arguing case for Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has stated that ro was 'completely blocked' when an interver said that school buses, ambulances etc are being allowed. Shaheen Bagh protests started on December 15 and continue to this date.

While listening to petition Justice Kaul observed," If this is allowed to continue on one ro today for one legislation, tomorrow it will be ar ro for ar legislation. If everyone starts blocking ros, even due to genuine concerns, where will we put a stop to this?  We are t against people raising ir concerns but question is where can you protest as block of traffic and inconvenience to citizens is our concern".

Shaheen Bagh: 'Will meet Amit Shah

Earlier on Saturday, Shaheen Bagh protestors anunced that y will meet Home Minister Amit Shah at 2 PM on Sunday at his residence after Home Minister h said that he was open to discussion on amended Citizenship Act (CAA) with anyone including protestors at Shaheen Bagh at a Delhi event. While protestors did march to Shah's residence y were stopped by Delhi police as y did t have permission. A delegation of protestors talked to police but refused to send a delegation to meet Shah. n, y returned back to ir sit-in protests at Shaheen Bagh.

Shaheen Bagh protests began on December 14 where thousands of people, including women and children camped on streets have been a major poll controversy. Though PM Modi called it a 'political experiment', Congress and AAP  have supported protests - offering biryani to protestors. Inspite of Shaheen Bagh Coordination committee calling off ir part of protests on January 2, citing politicizing of protests, protests against NRC and CAA continue mainly led by Muslim women.
