Sharjeel Imam arrested for involvement in Jamia violence, sent to one day police custody
The Delhi Crime Branch arrested PhD student Sharjeel Imam for his involvement in the Jamia violence and was sent to one-day police custody by a Delhi court.

Delhi Crime Branch arrested JNU PhD student Sharjeel Imam for second time on Monday. According to police, he is suspected to be involved in December 15 Jamia violence that broke out during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act.
An accused in case disclosed that he was allegedly provoked by Sharjeel Imam’s speeches. Subsequently, a Delhi court sent Imam to one-day police custody in this case. Currently, he is in judicial custody after sedition charges were slapped against him for 'Cut Assam from India' speech.

Jamia violence
Jamia violence refers to clash between people and police in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia University which left nearly 60 people injured. Subsequently, re were reports of students being injured and detained as police entered Jamia campus. Moreover, least 5 buses were torched and more than 100 public and private vehicles were damd. Later, Delhi police released photos of 70 people involved in violence.

On February 15, Jamia Coordination Committee released a video of police officers hitting students in first-floor reing hall of varsity. While BJP cast aspersion over video, or political parties issued a strong condemnation of same. Earlier in day, two more videos emerged where police personnel are seen thrashing students as y tried to run away from library. One of police personnel seemingly tried to destroy CCTV installed in library, in a clip camera neless captured.

Imam's provocative speech
Imam was a key organizer of Shaheen Bagh protests. His controversial remarks came to light on January 25 when BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra shared a video that featured him. In video purportedly from Aligarh in Uttar Presh, he is heard saying that 5 lakh people can come toger and permanently cut rth-East from India. Moreover, he stressed that this was only way in which Indian government would pay heed to concerns of protesters. He was arrested from Bihar's Jehanab district on January 28. As per sources, Uttar Presh police is set to invoke National Security Act against Imam very soon.
In video, Imam said, "If we have 5 lakh organized people n we can permanently cut rth-east from India or at least for one month. Put so much (unclear) on ro that y cant even remove it for a month. It is our responsibility to isolate Assam from India, n only y will listen to us."
