Supreme Court reserves Ayodhya verdict after 40-day marathon hearings

The SC on Wednesday, October 16, reserved the verdict Ayodhya's Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid land dispute case as CJI Gogoi heard concluding arguments

Supreme Court on Wednesday, October 16, reserved verdict in contentious and politically-sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid land dispute case. bench of apex court heed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, and comprising of SC judges Justices S.A. Bopde, D.Y. Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan, S. Abdul Nazeer reserved verdict in case after hearing concluding arguments from parties.

oral arguments in long-pending Ayodhya case has been concluded. apex court has given three days' time to  parties to file any written submissions. ditionally, sources from inside courtroom said that verdict in case can be prounced before vember 17. tably, as Rajeev Dhawan, counsel of Muslim body concluded his arguments, he has reiterated his demand to have mosque restored in its original condition as it existed before demolition on December 6, 1992.

In a major twist on 40th day of day-to-day hearing in Ayodhya case, mediation panel of Justice FMI Kalifulla, Senior vocate Sriram Panchu, and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar filed a settlement report before Supreme Court. This came after  Sunni Waqf board surrendered its claim over disputed land in Ayodhya. decision came in light of an agreement reached between a few parties during mediation proceedings, at final leg of hearing on 2.77 acres disputed land. mediation panel submitted sealed report in apex court.

As Ayodhya case entered last day of hearing, in a distasteful move, senior vocate Rajeev Dhawan, who is representing Muslim group in case tore a book inside courtroom. book in question ‘Ayodhya Revisited’ was submitted to bench by senior vocate Vikas Singh to supplement his arguments. Dhavan objected to submission and tore ps of book. bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi condemning incident stated that if behaviour continues, y would halt proceedings and walk out.

Heated exchanges in Supreme Court on Tuesday

On Tuesday too, Supreme Court (SC) saw heated exchanges between lawyers representing Hindu and Muslim parties during proceedings. Dhavan representing Muslim parties got up and intervened when Parasaran was submitting that, a "historical wrong" was committed by Mughal emperor Babur after his conquest of India more than 433 years ago by constructing a mosque at birthplace of Lord Ram and it needed to be corrected. "This is entirely a new argument. All this could have been argued by m in or lawsuits as well. I am entitled to give reply in rejoinder arguments," Dhavan told bench,  Parasaran, along with ar senior vocate C S Vaidyanathan, objected that re were a lot of interruptions from or side and court should set things right as this is case of public right.

Mediation panel failed

On August 2, CJI Ranjan Gogoi declared that Ayodhya mediation panel failed to come to a settlement and declared that day-to-day hearings will start from August 6. Earlier on July 31,  Ayodhya mediation panel was allowed to continue talks to reach consensus between Hindu and Muslim sides over dispute of construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. After discussions, panel submitted report.

Mediation panel formed to solve dispute

apex court h me mediation panel, earlier this year. panel consisted of Justice FMI Kalifulla, Senior vocate Sriram Panchu, and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. panel was me for 8-week and Uttar Presh's Faizab was set as location where mediation would be held. eight-week deline for mediation talks were completed on May 3. However, deline was extended and apex court on July 18 asked mediation committee  to continue process and submit a report on progress me till July 31.
