The Cyclonic storm has been named Hamoon by Iran. The word ‘Hamoon’ is a Persian word meaning ‘inland desert lakes or marshlands’. They are formed as natural seasonal reservoirs in areas adjoining the Helmand basin.

The names of cyclones are chosen by different nations. Tropical cyclones forming in Indian oceans are named by 13 member countries based on the adopted sequential orders. As per the protocol, the names proposed by member nations need to be short, easy to pronounce and must not exceed eight letters.
