A Dalit youth h his he tonsured and was beaten up, allegedly by police, in East Godavari district, after a ruling YSR Congress party leer lodged a complaint over blocking of a sand-len lorry.

incident came to light on Tuesday, inviting wrath of opposition parties,following which Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy took serious te of it and pulled up police.

Director General of Police D G Sawang said a Sub- Inspector at police station concerned has been arrested, while two constables were placed under suspension.

A case has been registered under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.

DGP warned that such acts would t be tolerated and said furr legal steps would be taken in case.

A senior police officer said Dalit youth was booked in a case filed by YSRC leer Kavala Krishna Murthy for allegedly blocking truck that was reportedly transporting sand illicitly.

According to statement issued by aggrieved youth, Krishna Murthy kcked him down with his car when he questioned illegal transport of sand.

Later a case was registered against him in Seetanagaram police station and police picked him up.

He was allegedly beaten up before being tonsured.

On learning about incident, local Deputy Superintendent of Police S N Rao visited youth in hospital and conducted an inquiry.

Based on his statement, Seetanagaram Sub-Inspector and two constables were placed under suspension and SI was later arrested.

Leer of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu deunced police action and alleged that atrocities on Dalits have increased under Jagan Mohan Reddys rule.

State Congress president S Sailajanath also strongly condemned incident and demanded stern action against those responsible.

Home Minister M Sucharita and Education Minister A Suresh also condemned incident.

Sucharita said in a statement that government has taken incident very seriously and would punish guilty sternly.
