Defence Minister to commission submarine INS Khanderi on September 28

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in an effort to give a major boost to Navy's underwater combat capabilities, is touted to commission the second Kalvari class submarine INS Khanderi on September 28. The Defence Minister is all set to take off to Goa to spend a day on the INS Vikramaditya. The INS Khanderi was launched in August 2017. The second INS Khanderi Scorpene submarine was recently handed over to the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL). Khanderi is a diesel-electric attack submarine that has been designed by a French organisation called Naval Group.

INS Khanderi 

The Scorpene-class submarine has superior stealth and ability to launch damaging attacks on the enemy using precision-guided weapons. The stealth features of the Khanderi will make it immune to various other submarines. The submarine has been designed to operate in all areas, including the tropics. The Khanderi submarine can stay out in the sea for 50 days with a crew of 8 officers and 35 sailors.

Indian Navy's underwater capabilities 

To further enhance India's underwater capabilities, INS Khanderi, the second scorpene submarine is all set to join the much-coveted Navy fleet. The submarine can undertake various missions like anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, area surveillance to name a few. The INS Khanderi will also be used for intelligence gathering purposes. The first Scorpene submarine INS Kalvari was commissioned into the Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 2017. PM Modi had earlier said that Kalvari was an excellent example of 'Make in India' and will boost the Navy's might.
