Defense Ministry directs forces to submit studies on Theatre Command by April 2022: Report

The Department of Military Affairs (DMA) under the Defence Ministry has asked the three services to conduct studies on the structure of Theatre Command by 2022.

In latest development in creation of atre command,  Department of Military Affairs (DMA) under Defence Ministry has asked three services to conduct studies on structures of new formations and submit ir reports by April next year (2022). As per ANI report, a high-level meeting was chaired by  Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat on November 1 in which three services chiefs along with officers were nominated to conduct studies.

As per report,  Indian Army nominated Central Army commander Lt Gen YK Dimri along with South Western Army commander Lt Gen Amardeep Singh Bhinder to conduct study for creation of se commands.It furr stated that  plan of DMA is to create four new atre commands which will not include most sensitive Lakh sector which has seen two aggressions by armies of Pakistan and China respectively in last two deces.

meeting was also attended by Vice miral Anil Chawla who h earlier also done study for creation of Maritime atre Command. report furr stated that issue h become slightly controversial after Indian Air Force expressed reservations on way atre commands were being created and way se commands were to be created. Indian Air Force has not yet nominated any officer for conducting study as per new instructions issued by DMA.

Following completion of ir respective studies, four to five officers would be asked to start working for testing structures and how y would be me integrated with all elements.

CDS General Bipin Rawat & atre Command

As per PTI report, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat has been working on aterisation model under which at least six new integrated commands are being envisaged.  atre commands are being set up under a larger mandate of ensuring synergy among three service chiefs to deal with future security challenges.

CDS h also visited Norrn American Aerospace Defence command during his recent US visit and important notes were taken by delegation on how this would help Indian system.  creation of atre commands has been envisaged by government for enhancing jointness among forces for warfighting.

Gen Rawat took over as India's first CDS on January 1, 2020, with a mandate to bring in convergence among three services and restructure military commands to effectively deal with future security challenges. 

atre command would ensure complete integration of three services, i.e. Army, Navy, and Airforce, and would ditionally integrate ir assets. Presently three services operate under ir own independent commands — Army,  Navy, and Air Force.
