Dehradun Tense As Bajrang Dal Holds Protest Against Cops After Interfaith Couple Meet At Station

Several people were detained at Dehradun railway station after clashes erupted between two groups over an interfaith couple who was fighting at the station.

Dehradun: Tense situation prevailed in Dehradun after communal clash erupted over an interfaith couple who met at the Dehradun Railway Station in Uttarakhand. The incident took place late Thursday. Over 100 people have been booked so far including Bajrang Dal workers.

The matter was highlighted when the interfaith couple was witnessed arguing by other passengers at the railway station. The RPF personnel, who are present at the railway stations, intervened and took the couple along with them.

They found out that the girl, 16, had come from Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district and has been missing for a day.

The girl’s family had filed a missing person complaint in badaun a day before. The cops called her family informing about the girl following which they left for Dehradun.

Amid this, a clash erupted between two groups at the railway station over the interfaith couple. One group was led by Vikas Verma and the other by Asif Qureshi, chief of the Dehradun city unit of Azad Samaj Party.

The argument between the two groups became worse following which they started pelting stones on each other.

The administration quickly intervened as other passengers at the station rushed to safety. Around 100 people have been detained so far after the incident.

After several people were detained, Bajrang Dal workers held a protest at Clock Tower in Dehradun against the police and administration in connection with the stone pelting incident at the Railway Station on Thursday night.

Police explains entire matter after clashes erupt over interfaith couple  

SSP Dehradun Ajay Singh said, “Yesterday a minor girl and youth met at a railway station and then few people gathered there... later we came to know that the girl came from Budaun and missing complaint was registered on her... Police team reached the spot... but people from some organisations and people from different communities gathered there... sloganeering and stone pelting took place between the people of the two communities, but there were also many such people whom we couldn't identify who they were and which organisation they belong to. Police dispersed the crowd and FIR was registered against this incident... today many people from both communities were detained for interrogation and also we asked them to identify people who were part of the protest so that we could arrest them...”

“An incident took place at Dehradun Railway Station where a minor girl and a man were seen talking. The ground police team of RPF and GRP brought them for questioning after a suspicion. The minor girl had come from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh and she had called her friend to meet. The police also found that a missing report had been filed in Badaun for the girl and the police team was reaching based on the location... Upon interrogation, it was known that it was a matter related to Hindu-Muslim or different communities. Following this, some people gathered and got into an argument. Police reached the spot. There was also stone pelting and some vehicles were also vandalised. The police took the situation under control and a case has been registered against unknown persons...”

Speaking on the matter, SP City, Dehradun, Pramod Kumar said, "Last evening, in an altercation between two groups there was stone pelting and attempt to damage some vehicles too. In this incident, PS Paltan Bazaar has registered a case under BNS and & 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act and Defacement of Public Property. Attempts are being made to arrest those named. The situation is under control now... Police conducted a flag march in some areas of the city last night. Police deployed in mixed population areas...The matter pertains to a girl from Badaun who came here.... Both the girl and the man are from Badaun. The girl has been handed over to her family."
