Delhi Cabinet on Saturday approved an expenditure of Rs 36 crore for carrying out mass awareness campaigns against pollution in national capital, an official statement said. While re has been a 25 percent reduction in pollution in Delhi, winter months see a major spike in pollution levels, it said.

'A massive public awareness campaign is necessary'

According to statement, one of major reasons behind this increase in pollution levels is stubble burning that takes place in Delhi's neighboring states. One of challenges faced by any government in such a situation is regarding compliance and citizens' participation in emergency measures as y often intrude upon regular lives of people, it said.

"This is reason why a massive public awareness campaign is necessary, t merely to inform citizens about specific modalities, but also to build confidence of citizens to participate in such measures," statement said.

'36 crore approved'

" Cabinet has approved an expenditure of Rs 36 crore from Budget of Directorate of Information and Publicity towards mass awareness campaigns," it stated.

Various measures being taken by government to check pollution levels in Delhi include implementation of odd-even ro rationing scheme from vember 4 to 15 and distribution of free masks to city residents, among ors, statement said.

Delhi government is committed to t just furr reducing pollution in months to come, but also to protect citizens from health hazards posed by sudden spike in air pollution, it said.
