Delhi CM Kejriwal to seek "early decision" on Kanhaiya Kumar's JNU sedition case

The chief minister's comments came hours after a court directed AAP to file a status report till April 3 on sanctions to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar and others.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said he will ask department concerned to take an "early decision" on prosecution sanction against former JNU students' union president and CPI(M) leer Kanhaiya Kumar and ors in a sedition case. chief minister's comments came hours after a court directed Delhi government to file a status report till April 3 on issue of sanctions to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar and ors.

"I don't have a say in department concerned (home). I cant change ir (department's) decision, but will ask m to decide as soon as possible," Kejriwal told reporters when asked about prosecution sanction pending with Delhi government in sedition case.

Sources in government said Home department has to take a decision in connection with case. While hearing case, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Purushottam Pathak also directed Delhi Police to send a reminder to city government seeking requisite sanctions to prosecute Kumar. court passed directions after police submitted that permission to prosecute Kumar and ors has t been granted yet and letter requesting sanction is pending with GNCTD.

JNU sedition case

Following JNU sedition case’s recent timeline; on April 3, AAP government h informed court that it would take a month to decide wher to grant sanction to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar and ors. Later, on April 5, Delhi Government h submitted a reply before Special CBI court. 

This reply showed that Delhi Police h filed charge sheet in case in a "secretive" and "hasty" manner, without obtaining approval of appropriate authority. And subsequently, on July 23 this year, Delhi Police was granted time till September 18 to obtain requisite sanction in JNU sedition case.

police in its January charge sheet claimed that re were videos wherein Kanhaiya Kumar was seen leing a group of students. According to sheet, a few witnesses also identified group of students raising anti-national slogans on JNU campus. police have charged Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, and Anirban Bhattacharya for raising 'anti-national slogans' during an event organised in college. This event h been organised to mark hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Videos of sloganeering h been accessed by Republic TV.
