New Delhi: Four days after three students died due to waterlogging in a flooded basement coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar, Republic TV on Tuesday, July 30 confronted Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on the mishap. However, Shelly dodged the question saying that she "has a meeting."

"We'll talk later on. I have a meeting...I have a meeting ma'am..." the mayor said.

Amid a crackdown by the MCD, UPSC aspirants staged a massive protest in old Rajinder Nagar against coaching centres running “illegal” classes.

On Tuesday, the MCD mayor went on to inspect and seal the basement of the coaching centre in Preet Vihar.

Shelly Assures Strict Actions

After the incident came to light, Shelly said, "As soon as we came to know about the incident, MLA Durgesh Pathak and I came here immediately. We have heard that a drainage or sewer blasted like a flash flood and the basement got filled with water."

"The investigation and rescue operations are underway. Everything will be clear in some time. Any person responsible, MCD or any other department, will not be spared."

"This is not the time to make allegations. We should rise above politics and take action..." the Delhi Mayor asserted.

What Happened at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Delhi's Rajendra Nagar?

According to the Delhi Fire Department (DFS), a call about waterlogging was received from the Rao IAS Study Centre at about 7 pm.

"A total of five fire tenders were rushed to the site. The basement was full of water," an official said.

The body of a female student was retrieved from the site during the rescue operation by the NDRF, local police and fire department, the officials said.

Later, the bodies of two other students were retrieved; a total of three aspirants lost their lives.
